First of all, howdy everyone! Haven't been in here in ages.
I wanted to let you guys know that I'm going to take a break from burning up motherboards and video cards in the name of science. I've recently passed through 2 million credits for SETI (and around 1 million aggregate in other projects). A long time ago, in a land far far away, I started crunching at the behest of a now aged and wizened Kinguni, in an eden we knew as DSLR. Almost a decade later (9 years this past January, in fact), that eden is long forgotten, new fields and streams have been colonized, and I find it's time for this old 3dcowboy to shut things down. Probably not forever, but for a while. Way back when I started, I set a goal of 1 million credits, which at the time seemed astronomical (pun intended) and far into the future. 1 million came and went, and I happily continued to upgrade, replace, rebuild to accommodate the ever increasing demands of the crunching software. 2 million rolled around early this new year, and I sat down to evaluate what I'd accomplished and what the increasing costs of running my little (cpu) farm were. I've decided put the money and time towards some travel with the little woman (long overdue). We need to practice up for when I retire in 8 years or so. Maybe after we've cured the wanderlust with some well deserved travel, I'll look back in on the distributed computing scene and see whats what.
Anyhow. I've met tons of wonderful people around distributed computing, and seen people help each other out in times of need, offer a kind word, or spare computer parts, or just the warmth of comradeship in a common goal. It's been a rewarding and enriching experience (and I got to keep my gaming machine up to par with the infamous "but I need this new CPU/motherboard/memory/hard drive for science!". But I digress.
I'll let my Que's dribble down to zero and slowly take things offline as they drain, and I'll think of all the folks that helped to make this such a rich and rewarding experience as I do so.
In the immortal words of Douglas Adams, "So Long, and thanks for all the fish!"
