CASP8
(United States) Modified By Jack Shaftoe on 5/10/2008 9:19:15 AM)

Anyone have any thoughts on running Rosetta to help them during the CASP8 competition?  I'm considering helping them out with my 3 boxes during that run...  Let me know if anyone else is interested.  I think it starts up pretty soon, but didn't see an announcement on the Rosie homepage

Interested in other opinions.

I'd be interested as a team effort perhaps, although I'm rather addicted to pumping up my SETI RAC ATM.

Any other BOINC projects doing the CASP8 competition, POEM, maybe?

edit- yes, POEM is in the competition- http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/index.php , as is Rosetta, check the News column- http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/index.php

There is a POEM race of some sort about to start as well.

Rosetta's message board is littered with people complaining about stability issues.  I'm guessing that's why you would prefer something else Paul?  I would consider a POEM push if others are down.  Let me know.

I don't prefer either, actually. I'm not much of a folder, the one project genre I typically avoid. I just ran across something about it on another site's forum while looking for info on Spinhenge being down.

I'm not saying I won't throw down if we decide to do a team push on some CASP8 stuff, though! cool.gif

I do all Rosetta and Ralph.

CASP8 has started.  I believe targets were supposed to start being released to the teams around May 5th.

I haven't had any stability issues with Rosetta.

The Rosetta scientist also released a game called Fold It where you manually fold proteins competing for the best score.  They are researching whether human puzzle solving abilities will produce usuable results.

Setting my machines to No New Tasks from QMC tonight, they have about 3 days of work to finish.  I'll run either Rosie or POEM depending on a team push if others are interested.  As of right now I would prefer Rosetta but as you can see - I'm all ears for other opinions.

I will figure out how to get some boxes up and running for Rosetta.

Drizzt, nice to see you around!

I'm in for a quad or two, just let me know which project.

On the Rosetta homepage today:

 David Baker wrote:

CASP8 is ramping up with a handful of targets released last week, and many more expected this week. The reason you haven't seen many CASP8 work units as we are making a final benchmarking of all the new structure prediction protocols we have developed over the past two years in the new miniRosetta code framework. The testing is on CASP7 targets--we want to determine which of our new methods are best before going all out on the CASP8 targets (yes, we would like to have completed the benchmarking before casp8 started, but there has been so much to do!). the testing should be complete monday and tuesday, and based on these results we will be sending out primarly casp8 work units next week using the approaches the tests currently running show are most successful.

I can't emphasize enough how critical all of your contributions are to our efforts to improve protein structure prediction methods! we have had many ideas on potential improvements which we have implemented, but the only way to know whether we are actually getting closer to the truth is to do rigorous testing (the casp7 targets for which we now know the structures are a perfect test set), and this would quite simply be impossible without your contributions! -- David Baker

I now have a few clients running Rosetta.  We may be getting in a few servers that I can temporarly put it on as well.

I still have about 36 hours of QMC backlog to finish, then I will be all Rosetta.

Perhaps POEM is a better idea...

http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=4124

Decrasing my run time prefs from 24 hours to 3 hours.  Hope that helps.

Re: CASP8

Funny.  I found a server had a bad SAS controller in it due to errors in Rosetta on the box.

Other than that, it's been okay for me.

Re: CASP8

Found a solution of reducing my runtimes to 4-8 hours.  I was previously running them at 24 hour runtimes.  All has been stable for the last 24 hours since I did that.

Re: CASP8

Looking good so far!  Xaak and Paul, I think Rosetta is where it's at - any chance you could join us with a quad or 2?    Make sure you keep those runtimes down to about 4-6 hours in your preferences.

Anyone else interested in joining us?

I'm still working on my SETI rac.

Once it tops out I'll put some resource share on Rosetta.
