I'm thinking about purchasing and overclocking. Question is should I just hold out until I can afford the higher cache Conroe.

Buy and send me one of each! When I'm done testing, I'll send ya back to slow one. [EMO]suspect.gif[/EMO]

more bang for your buck to buy the E6300 i'd buy 2 E6300's over a E6700 or E6600

Well there's the rub. I've seen a few Conroes running Seti, both with the extra l2 cache and without. My take on the extra cache is that you'll see 10-15% increase in RAC, when comparing say a 6400 and a 6600 overclocked to the same level. Worth the $100 extra? Probably so, since if you are going to overclock, you'll probably have some good memory able to scale over 400fsb, and a good motherboard to go along with it.
I'm running all my Conroes in the ballpark of 3300mhz, since at that point they all seem to need more than a little bump on the vcore. I like to use Ballistix ram we've been getting for 110-120 for a gig, at that price point, the memory ceiling is roughly 420-430 fsb. Memory that can go significantly higher tend to cost a good bit more. Since the Conroes start at 266FSB, the multi is pretty low, you'll need ram that really can scale in order to get the most out of it.
For that reason, I tend to stay away from the 6300, since the ram needs to run close to 500mhz to top it out.

my thinking was it would be better to put that extra $100 towards another conroe instead of getting a 10%-%15 increase u could double your credits with another conroe but ic your point with the ram issue and the low multi

I'm thinking the MB that Anandtech did their overclock testing with. I guess whatever I do it's worth it just to shut the very old AMDs down.

Which one is that? I prefer Gigabyte's 965 S3 or DS3 for $30 more. Not much difference between the 2, DS3 has solid capacitors. The board is an overclocker's dream, bios is the friendliest one I've used since my old Epox 8K3A, will let you screw up as much as you want, and still bring you back to a post screen. Asus makes some really good ones, but I find their AMI bioses rather highstrung, not as user friendly as Award bios used by the Gigabyte.

I chose the 6600 for two reasons, the extra cache and the higher multiplier. Mine are running at between 370 and 395 FSB with memory timings at 3-3-3-8 or 3-3-3-6. I'm running Ballistix ddr2-667 in one and PNY Verto ddr2-800 in two of them. The PNY runs with slightly tighter timings. I'm using the Gigabyte DS3 in one box, and the Asus P5B Deluxe in the other two. Both overclock about the same, but I like some of the features on the Asus a bit better. First, it's a thicker board, and the cpu socket is farther from the back of the motherboard. I had to remove my case fan and mount it on the outside of the case with a Big Typhoon using the DS3.

The Asus is the one Anandtech tested with. Still trying to figure things out as I get back into hardware. Gee, I take my company out of the bowels of token ring(still better then ethernet but died) and get a $400.00 bonus. Time to go back to Progressive and add a couple zeros. Anyways, 15% is not a reason to go to bigger cache. I'll take the 85% gain with another system.

Is it this RAM, Paul? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820146568
If you don't mind me asking, where can you order it for ~$120?

Yes, that's the flavor. The price has gone up, Gary and I were seeing those modules for that price or more, but Crucial apparently was cutting some of the online retailers deals. We saw those for quite some time at the $110 price point from MWave for months, then ZipZoomFly had them for a couple months, and I think New Egg had them for a while. Currently the 400Mhz version of Ballistix can be found here with a $25 rebate- http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=80061-3&ps=ho5

Yeah, prices are pretty volatile right now. Not that I have money to spend on myself so close to Christmas, but while checking out shipping costs, I saw that Zipzoomfly no longer ships to Canada. My guess is that brokerage fees at the border (typically $20-$30 via Fedex for items in this price range) caught some customers by surprise, and lead to nasty disputes, even though it's completely out of the vendor's hands. I know it's been an issue with Ebay purchases.
In any case, thanks for the info, Paul. I should be able to afford some DDR2 in the new year.

Warning !
You know that the onboard video is a big CPU thief right ?
I bought a motherboard and used the onboard video a few years back and noticed it took about 10-15% of the CPU power !
How ever you can of course use a old graphics card and disable the onboard video and the motherboard will work just fine.
Even a very old PCI card is better than use the onboard video !!!

How ever the E6400 is terrific I noticed, I make some 26 WUs per day with it ! [EMO]Cool Gallery/cool-smiley-010.gif[/EMO]
