Am I reading the comparisons correctly? Is there really a 90% increase in performance with these optimized applications? I'm about to install the windows sse2 version to check myself, but those claims seem a trifle.....optimistic?

looks like you can get a HUGE increase in performance with the optimized ones.
The intel compiler does some awesome stuff!

I would be sceptical of anything over about 30% with the enhanced app. 90% might be a real figure against the old app, or might mean a 10% gain. The enhanced app has most of the known programming tricks in the standard app, so it normally only gains from the CPU specific compilation.

I like the idea of sticking to default apps. Look how we got burned when SETI upgraded last time.

I agree. I always thought one of the advantages of BOINC over classic SETI was that the app would update automatically when needed. Using an optimized app defeats this feature.

Well, I thought it was worth a try on one of my machines, just to say I did it. I'm getting about 30% better processing times (4-6 hours instead of 6-8). I'll leave it until SETI updates their version and then go back.

I have all of mine on optimized apps. 6 machines total, 1 Mac, 2 linux, and 2 windows.
I think the 90% was versus the stock client on the test wu, so other AR work units will vary.

Those are actually BOINC optimizers, yes?

Yes those, are various flavors for the BOINC client itself, not the optimized Seti client. A nice selection, though.

Thanks for the link. That's a nice set of clients for BOINC. I'll have to take some time and play with them.

Hey, I just saw this threadand was wondering what I had to do in order to use these? Do I need to start over with a new client or is it a matter of adding files to the client directory?
I am running SUSE Linux 10.0 and Windows XP Pro
Thanks

Stop BOINC, drop the new files in, restart BOINC. Pretty simple.

Ok, I have the Windows client all set up and running the optimixed client. I will tackle the Linux clients a little later. Thanks for the info!
Linux version is now running the new client as well. Let's see how well it works!

Hey, I just wanted to know how many of you are Optimizing? If so, which optimized client are you using? What are your experiences? I've followed threads and have decided to use the kwsn app for my P3 and P4 machines, I've even tried the automatic installer here http://lunatics.at/index.php?module=Downloads;catd=4 and my SSE3 machines crunch better using SSE2 instruction. In any event, All of the optimized machines are running slower, or appear to be.. It's been 3 days now and I have not noticed any improvements. So, big question: What am I doing wrong? I've seen reports from other users who have dramatic gains. I'm using windows XP and some Linux boxes. No differences.
Why am I now posting about this?? I've been tempted many times to optimize in the past, I've done this once before on my entire farm and got burned when Seti folk decided to upgrade their app from 4.x to 5.x or whatever the called it. I had to uninstall the old and install the new on each and every box. Since then, I've been skeptical of optimizing thinking that now that if I set it, I can now forget it. If Seti decides to update their app again, I don't have to do a darn thing.
Please advise.

I'm using SSE3 on the boxes that use that instruction set (all of mine). The benchmark app isn't 100%, depends on what's running on your box along with it at the time. I'm getting roughly 30-40% improvement on windows vs Berkeley's stock app (no linux here). I hope this helps.

I staying Berk stock, 'cuz a) as Kinguni mentioned, we got burned last time around, and
b) with a Sempron 2200 I can only bump up to SSE anyway. If I could go SSE2/3, I might think about it.

My linux and windows machines use sse2 on the p4's and sse on the 2 amd's, so that's what I use, and they seem to run just fine.
On my mac I am using Alex Kan's optimized and it seems there that my rac on my 1.25ghz mini is close to the rac on a 2.4p4 with the chicken client.
tho my rac has dropped after crunching a few days worth of rosetta on the last berk day.
