I had just noticed on some boards peeps were attaching without realizing what it even was.

This is a lottery and not science. You must purchase the EternityII™ puzzle (aprox. $60 us).

Then you can crunch for half of the prize money (the project gets the other half)

Hi.
I am the administrator for this project, http://eternity2.net.
This project provides participants with a BOINC application which attempts to solve the (soon to be released) puzzle EternityII. (see its official site http://www.eternityii.com).
If your computer solves this puzzle, you will share (50/50) the US$2,000,000 prize with eternity2.net!
In order to solve this puzzle using the Eternity2.net boinc software, you will need to own a legitimate copy of the puzzle. This is due to copyright restrictions. Obviously it would be great to be able to distribute the software solver 'complete' with all necessary details of the actual puzzle pieces, however the inventor and distributors have indicated that this would be a breach of their copyright, and they would likely sue me!
Hence users are required to type in some information about their puzzle in order to prove that they own it.
You can read more about the issues at http://eternity2.net/legal.php

So this project isn't suitable to just 'sign up for' without understanding the project's goals, and I apologize if some users have signed up and then been disappointed that additional steps (and a puzzle purchase) are required before meaningful work units can be achieved.

For those users who do wish to buy the puzzle, and join this project, good luck for winning US$1,000,000 !

I joined.  I was UOTD.  I created our team.  I attached.  I read. I solved the sample puzzle.  I don't have £34.99 for the real puzzle.  I detached.

Forgive me, for as usual, I know knot what I do.

Hi

The new boinc project, http://eternity2.net, is going well. We have a few hundred active users, with over 30 new users per day signing up. There is now almost 1 TeraFlop of processing power dedicated to finding the answer to the US$2,000,000 puzzle! As noted above, it is unfortunately necessary for users to do some work prior to 'blindly' signing up for this project. With the imminent launch of this puzzle (www.eternityii.com) throughout the USA/Canada, I expect interest will continue to increase.

Regards,

Dave Clark

Eternity2.net - Newsletter 2, 9 December 2007

Hi xxxx.

Thanks to all the contributors to the Eternity2.net project!

Collectively we have over 1.6 TeraFlops of processing power working on the puzzle, and have performed over 10^19 CPU operations!

The highest scores achieved by eternity2.net users are in the mid 460ish range. (/480)

(although we don't discuss/publish the details anymore in case this leads to an entry being disqualified)

The big news is that I have decided to stop maintaining the eternity2.net project.

There are several reasons - eg

1) Takes a bit of time

2) Takes a bit of money

3) Expected monetary return is estimated to be $0.000000000001 (insert your own estimate here...)

(although the possible $10,000 for highest score probably raises the expected return into the few hundreds of dollar range)

4) Xmas is coming and I want to forget about computing for a while :)

5) The main reason I created the site wasn't to solve the puzzle via a brute force backtracker. This was always clearly going to be impossible.

My main goal was to become the world expert on the puzzle, and to be the main point of contact for anyone who had a good, novel idea

for solving the puzzle. This goal has largely been achieved. Thanks to all the people who have corresponded with me, and shared their ideas.

None of these ideas has proved to be sufficient to solve the puzzle, but I've learnt a lot about a whole range of interesting things :)

6) I was determined that if anyone was going to solve the puzzle, it would be me. It appears likely now that the solution will never be found.

I'll probably leave the site running for a few days yet, and open source the code.

If anyone is desperately keen to take over the eternity2.net site (and is a programmer, and knows how to run a BOINC web site), then let me know. The entire setup of the site is contained in a single (linux) VMWare image which I've

been running on a simple Windows XP box on my home computer.

Cheers and Good Luck!

Dave Clark

That boggles the mind.

Way to be in it for the money, amd then find out there isn't any after 4.5 months. Twit.

I had a stronger epithet in mind, but...

I'd give ya a thumbs-up if we had 'em!
