Rosetta@home is a medical related project that is currently working on improving the Rosetta software application and is also competing in the Casp7 competition. Casp7 is a competition for different protein structure prediction programs to find the fastest and most accurate program for predicting the final folded structure of a protein.
The Rosetta project has in the past done some actual disease research, and most likely will sometime in the future.
David Baker, the head of the project, and originator of the Rosetta Software has gotten alot of very good press lately. I'll try to find some links, but they include some interesting articles in the mass media, as well as a very informative segment on NPR about R@H and distributed computing in general.
Information on the project, what it does, and what it may do in the future can be found on their homepage, http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/
