orbit@home News  (Canada)
Modified By Kinguni on 3/4/2007 1:29:53 PM
February 26, 2007

We have finally some news. Good news. We're going to receive a very substantial donation sometime in the next four months, that will allow this project to reach the public beta phase, with support for clients for Linux/Mac OS X/Windows, new work units generated on a daily basis, and a graphical screen saver. Before then, we're going to update the orbit@home website, implementing a donation mechanism and exploring new ways to provide the funding for the project. Your ideas are welcome! One more thing: we're going to re-open for registration by new users. Welcome to the regenerated orbit@home!

Ok I may be being Blonde here, but what is this project all about, what is it aiming to achieve as I can find no such information on their webpages.

Well, if the project ever gets enough funding to get started it will be trying to find and track Near Earth Objects, asteroids and the like. No work has been given out yet, there is also no app for windows based machines yet. They have resumed account creation but that's about it, sadly.

Many thanks Xaak, nice concise answer..appreciated. And for my part, IF this project gets off the ground then it will get my support too.

I've attached and joined The Team there.  This is one of several projects I am attached to that doesn't have work very often - LHC, Pirates, RALPH.  But, when they do, I crunch 'em.  In the mean time, I multi-thread to E@H and Rosetta.

Re: orbit@home News  (Canada)

Well, a year later and we have some good news, off the Orbit@Home website;

       January 16, 2008
We have received the grant money from NASA. Part of this money will be used soon to acquire a dedicated server, and by February 2008 the new server should be up and running. Between now and then, not much will happen, but expect a period of about a week during the which orbit@home will be down because of the server transition. For several reasons, we're also debating the possibility to start with a fresh installation of BOINC, that would thus require a new registration by all the users. We expect to start to develop actively this project in March 2008. Thanks for waiting for such a long time, and see you then.

Re: orbit@home News  (United States)

FYI: I registered yesterday, but BOINC 5.10.30 says the URL they give is not that of a BOINC-based project.

Email to them is bouncing around but hasn't yet exhausted retries.  So far, their email has been refusing connections.

Bottom line: go to your nearest ER/ED/A&E and borrow some patients. [sic]

Re: orbit@home News  (Canada)

Registration Now Open

As anticipated, we're now opening orbit@home for registration. The master URL for the BOINC section of orbit@home is: http://orbit.psi.edu/oah/

Even if you registered before, you'll need to register again at this time, as we're starting with a new & clean installation of BOINC on this new server. Any previous account is no longer valid, and will not work.

As we are now devoting 100% of our time to this project, you can expect many updates, apps and WUs soon. We'll update the project Mission and Roadmap soon to state clearly what are our goals and how we plan to achieve them. Thanks for staying with us.

User #16, machine #9 for project; I might be the first member after the founder, our beloved and most perverted Greeri.
