Hotmail sucks
(United States) Modified By Xaak on 11/20/2007 3:04:16 PM)

Ok, I've had it with hotmail.  No new user registrations with Microsoft owned email addresses will be allowed here or on the Stats 'N Stones site.  I've gone back and forth with them, and they can't even figure out why their own software is not delivering emails.  But they did suggest I pay extortion to an email whitelist company they deal with .

Since the site does send out some automated emails (when you get a private message) or password reminders and the like, I'd suggest to everyone who registered with a hotmail, msn, live, or any other known Microsoft email address to change over to another email provider.  You can change your email address in your site profile.  I will not intervene manually on any Microsoft email related issue anymore.

Feel free to complain to Hotmail, as this is entirely their problem.  The only place I can find to register a complaint is https://support.live.com/eform.aspx?productKey=wlmail&page=wlsupport_home_options_form_byemail&ct=eformts

I'm recommending Gmail or Yahoo Mail but every other mail provider will do as Microsoft is the only one who won't deliver legitimate emails.

Well, this isn't Bill, it's some idiot low level support techs who don't understand that not delivering false positives will lose customers fast.

Do you even need invites anymore?  If so, I have 50 also.  PM me here if you need one and I'll be glad to send you out an invite.  Anything to get rid of hotmail.

Gary

I am familiar with the pain in the ass Hotmail/Microsoft networks cause you.  I periodically have problems with them and all I can do is grit my teeth.

If your system generates e-mail that looks "spammy" to their network rules, it will probably have problems getting delivered.  Pay particular attention to your SPF records as well.

Yahoo has periodic bouts of black-holeing e-mail as well.  Gmail seems fairly reliable.

Re: Hotmail sucks

Yeah, I have valid spf records for all my domains, the mail server's not on any blacklists, and the email is what it is, a simple registration confirmation.

I've never had a problem with yahoo black-holing emails.  Maybe they get marked as spam, but they still get delivered.

No, time to try and boycott hotmail.  I don't know why anyone would use a service that won't reliably deliver emails.  I guess the only way Microsoft could figure out how to prevent spam is to just not deliver anything.

LOL

I always felt you got what you paid for with free e-mail systems.

Re: Hotmail sucks

Heh, I guess hotmail didn't like having the shoe on the other foot.  They've granted our domain a "temporary mitigation" whatever that means.  It takes effect in 24 to 48 hours and supposedly allows their system to learn our email habits, again, whatever that means.  So, in 48 hours I'll lift the ban on Hotmail temporarily, but if we get one more blocked email, it's going right back into place.

It would still be preferable not to deal with them, but if you're intent on staying with hotmail, feel free to do so for the time being.

BillG: the big guy gets the heat; we know it's not him personally.

Never tried gmail without the invites, and don't think I'd know where to start to create a new account otherwise.  But they still show and they still work...

Years ago I had a hotmail account and had nothing but problems with it, never had one since.  I have 100 invites for Gmail if anyone need one.

It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues

I've been using my kinguni Hotmail addy for a long time which is why I stick with it. Mostly I use it for spammy stuff, but also for my BOINC accounts. Too big a pita to change it, not to mention one project where we have a team formed through the BOINC-wide teams setup and I can't get my account key from them.

That said, I do have a Gmail account but haven't used it at all. Kinguni was taken somehow though. So I took the next best thing, teamstarfire!

Edit: I just checked and our email is getting through to hotmail once again.

Quick update, hotmail emails seem to be working now (at least for my test account) so I'll temporarily lift the hotmail ban later today.  I'll keep an eye on it and we'll see how it goes.

Update:  Hotmail still sucks .  But I've re-enabled registrations with hotmail for the time being.  We'll see if it holds.
