Vista SP1
(United States) Modified By Jack Shaftoe on 5/13/2008 2:58:13 PM)

Just applied it this morning.  Accidentally.

1. "Updates for your computer" didn't specify this as being included.  Kinda wish they had flagged it as it isn't really an "Update" and I didn't really want it.  I should have known better than doing this first thing in the morning.

2. It took longer to apply this than it took to install Vista in the first place.  I left my apt, got milk and coffee filters from the store, came back 15 minutes later and it was still installing.  Q6600 and 2GB of RAM.  It took over 30 minutes and rebooted my machine twice.

3. After installing it, machine can't connect to the internet despite picking up a normal IP address and DNS from my router.  Windows Firewall is disabled, didn't have time to check anything else, had to get to work.

Ugh...

*Any* problems when applying a SP is worth complaining about IMO.  Never had these kinds of issues with XP or 2003, but I see your point.  I imagine I can fix the networking problem when I get home and all will be well.

I found this to be a good read:

I'm not ready for Vista. XP SP2 and 3 work fine for me.

I'm not either, but we have clients that are pushing us to support it so I needed to get acclimated with it.  :(  Microsoft won't let Dell/HP etc.. ship XP anymore beginning in June which effects all our smaller clients that buy their OS from their hardware vendors.

I imagine others will be going this route too..

Re: Vista SP1If

This is not Exactly the case.

HP, Dell and Lenovo have announced they are going to use a loophole in the licensing to offer "Pre-Downgraded" computers.  I am not saying you don't need to know Vista, it's just that XP isn't being thrown out just yet.

The below was taken from one of many websites talking about it.

"Despite Microsoft placing a June 30 deadline on Windows XP, with all sales of the OS being cut off following that date, three of the world’s largest PC manufacturers are exploiting loopholes in Microsoft licensing terms as a means of supplying XP beyond its official kill date.

Specifically, Dell and
HP are exploiting a clause in the downgrade rights that come with Vista Ultimate and Business that enables those buying these versions of Vista to have the option of downgrading to the older version of the operating system and keep it under the same Vista license. Lenovo, for its part, is including an XP recovery disk on some Vista-based systems, allowing owners to revert to the older OS if they choose to. Microsoft certainly isn’t going to be too happy about this, especially now that Vista Service Pack 1 is out."

Of course you are right Drizzt, but when they call us to ask about it they are giving us a June deadline "because Microsoft won't sell it anymore so we will have to buy Vista".  They are ignoring these loopholes and telling us to support Vista by June.  Rather than offer these loopholes as an alternative, Product Management caved and we are going Vista support by June.. Customer is always right...

Thankfully, we're using VM Ware rather than installing Vista all over the place at work.

Speaking of work - just got a new desktop!  Precision T3400 - Core 2 E8500 @ 3.16ghz, 4GB of RAM and dual 19" LCD's!    Wish I could crunch with it.  Man it's fast..

Until they "fix" enough that it runs as smoothly as XP, I'll hold off on Vista. Unfortunately I too am stuck in a position of having to support the POS, so I have a junk machine devoted to it.
