Smilies can only be put in from IE.  If you're using FF, use "IE Tab" to get 'r done.

I got a security popup from FF when I went to the site.  "Certificate name mismatch".

Autoformatting sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.  Alternatively, there's a hyperlink icon in the rich text editor, second row in the first grouping next to the clock looking thing.  You can either click it and past or type in your url, or type in the url in the editor, highlight it and then click the link.
