Breaking into an XP Home password protected account?
 (United States)

Still not sure where posts should go, but this forum seems generic enough.

A friend of a friend was killed by a drunk driver on the 4th, and his family has asked me to help them get into his PC so they can close out his affairs. It's an XP Home box, password protected. It's been quite awhile since I've even touched a "home" edition, but I seem to remember the admin account is disabled by default, and even if it wasn't, I'll assume for now it too would be password protected.

Anyone have ideas on how to get in? Once I'm in resetting his password should be easy enough. Worst case I can pull the drive and copy the data, import email and such to another box, but logging into his account seems the better option for his family.

Couple of hits with Google?

Edit: Sad to hear about the death. Condolences to the family and good luck.

Pretty sure you can get into it with the preferred option, but if for some reason you need to pull the hdd and copy data, you'll need to take ownership of the file system. Had to use XP's Computer Management to do it, MikeC showed me the way when I was struggling with pulling data off my Mom's hdd.

If you need only to access files stored on the HDD just put it into a different PC and you can get the files. As Paul said you may need to take ownership of the files but it should work. It works with Domain member XP pro, so I think it works with Home too.

If you need some personal data and if you can log-on the system with a different user, just try to install Cain&Abel and take security hashes. Assuming that a rather easy password has been set (beeing a home computer), with a dictionary attack on the hases you can crack the password with time.

Unlike Janko's guess, my password is unbreakable.  At least corporate (as in where I worked) security was never able to crack it, and they tried 4x yearly.

IIRC, from a command prompt, you will bypass most, if not all, NTFS permissions, ownership and restrictions.  This is especially helpful for stuff in the Recycle Bin, which is normally available only to whoever deleted it.

The XP migration tool (Files and Settings Transfer Wizard) might be useful for hitting the old box via the network.

I wonder if this would be of some help? http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/bootdisk.html the download is at the bottom, after the directions.

It's been a long time since I have researched it, and I havn't used it. But it is a linux boot disk that is supposed to be able to remove the password.

If I'm not mistaken using KNoppix linux that boots from CD will allow you to see all files on the HDD without having to get permissions. This being said its just a matter of knowing where the password(s) are stored on xp. I have known a few people online that have said they were able to access the drives. Its worth a shot and its free

N.B. The XP File and Settings Transfer Wizard won't touch executables, just settings and data files. MS thinks they're protecting licenses, or at least not being a party to violations.

Yes, I'm talking to myself.  Very few others understand me as well as I do.  I think.  I could be wrong.

Well fortunately with Home even when you disable the admin account, you can still log into it in safe mode. So the whole process took about 2 minutes.

Thanks for all the suggestions though, I'll make note incase this ever comes up again.
