Retiring
(Satellite Provider) Modified By Catman on 11/15/2007 3:07:49 AM)
Guys and gals. I want to announce my retirement from Seti. Its been a good run, and with a milestone of 500,000 cobblestones with the new version, and over 2700 on the old one, im calling it quits. However, this doesnt mean im quitting the team. Im just devoting all of my cycles to Climate Prediction now. At least until something better comes along to fit my interests. I may eventually return to Seti, but not in the short term unless we need a stat push sometime.

Trying to scare us, eh?

Congratulations on reaching that SETI 'stone! CPDN is very worthy of your cycles too.

Nice stone there, Catman!

CPDN is a good project, and has an offshoot, too--CPDN Seasonal Attribution.

Plus, for my money, running BOINC with 1 project is short-changing it's capabilities.  Besides our chat, I check boincstats for new (at least to me) projects--all the links are 'way down on the left side.

  to the big milestone.

And actually I've decided to do the same, when I hit 1mil. I call it a "game over".
I've given the project 8 years of my time and don't feel it has given any result to show for it.

So at least for the moment I just seem to get frustrated  over the lack of progress.

I'll turn to mainly RC-72 and the new started project Milkyway@home and I hope to see more space based projects
take a lift off in the future. BOINC or even rather non BOINC based.

How ever I'm leaving a door open for SETI@home, it is after all my first and truly only love...
so if I see any real progress with the project I may return ... one day  ...

I've been crunching for over 8 years also and understand where you are coming from.  I've been thinking seriously about shutting down my farm and only run something when I have my computer on.  I've had two computers in my farm die and I haven't bothered to get them back running or replaced.  If they die I just turning them off.

It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues

Congrats on the milestones, Catman, and good luck with CPDN.

The beauty of this team is that we're free to run whatever project we want, according to our priorities and interests, and still contribute.

Re: Retiring

This is also something I have been considering for a while.

As soon as I hit 1 million in SETI I think I will be switching to malaria, since it is something I have had personal experience with (currently working in West Africa). I have crunched SETI since May 2000. It is perhaps time I devoted my machines to a project with somewhat more tangible benefits for society.
