Active Again!
 (N/A)

H everyone, long time no visit..Just a quick note to let you know that I am active in SETI again. Hope your all well and life has been good to you over the last 14 months or so. For me it's been a mad time and I now have my first child on the way..due Jan 26th 2009!!

At the moment I just have BOINC running on my dual core laptop, but as soon as I have settled into my new home (just moved to a bigger place) I'll have two or three machines setup and running.

It feels good to be back!

Welcome back, James.  Congratulations on the little one on the way.  We sure can use some more crunchers on SETI.

Re: Active Again!
 (N/A)

Had a mare two days, this machine crashed and I could not restore it using the system restore. Turns out the G/F had installed some toolbars etc and one had a virus in it that caused the machine to constantly shutdown. I did a new install over the old windows and then managed to regain 80% of the machine from a backup I did in May. I had to reinstall BOINC but that was not a major. Now it has been recrunching for 24 hours stable it's good again...and ZoneAlarm Internet Security bought and installed to ensure no repeat.

The Dual 3.2HT Xeon machine I used to run now has windows installed and is in the process of downloading software and hardware updates to ensure stability and security..that should be crunching by the end of the day..tomorrow at the very latest...

It has two 250GB 7200rpm SATA HDD, 4GB of Registered 800MHz DDR2 and 2 of Xeon 3200/4MB/800 HT CPU's..so that should help the effort.

If I can get it working I have a HP desktop that has a 3.2GHz Pentium D CPU in it, but it died when I had leant it to a friend..I suspect the CPU is the problem as it hangs on the Boot screen when about to display the CPU information..Not the end of the world as a have a handful of CPU's here, and one is a 3200/1MB/800..I think it's only an HT, but it may be a P4D too..Keep the fingers crossed. In a few days it will be up and running.

Been so long since we've moderated something here I think we've forgotten how!

Now, if you want to get something done on BOINC and SETI, you need quads. My Q6600 has over 3 times the RAC of my D.

The D would do good on Milkyway@Home with the optimized app.

I will look into that project further in the near future Festess, thanks. I have a few things to do first...

  • Convert loft space into workshop to house dedicated BOINC machines
  • Upgrade several machines to Quad core cpu's
  • Arrange all the clutter between the empty roof void, garden shed and garage properly
  • Strip and rebuild my Land Rover Discovery...hence clearing out the garage!!
  • Help with baby!!! (afterall it is 50% my fault!)
