All members crunching???
(United Kingdom) Modified By Kinguni on 1/9/2007 1:40:35 AM)

Due to the problems at Berkeley today I have been paying a bit more attention to the stats on seti at work than I have for a very long time. and I noticed that despite the youth of this team, there are a significant number of inactive members.

I always think this makes our stats look tatty, and I am sure there are very good reasons why some of the members have stopped, perhaps switched to other BOINC projects, life got in the way etc etc.

Well I was thinking, what about those of us with multiple machines crunch units for an inactive account? I know this would mean contacting members (Kinguni) and seeing if they agree to this and obviously getting the necessary information to crunch on the account, but it strikes me that if we could get every member showing as ACTIVE, it would look a lot better, it may actually gain us members too. Bear in mind that this would not harm the team as the same total number of units would still be produced, but it could inspire some of the inactive members to become active again...so we should gain overall..

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

My only current thought is that we have a much more active member base than any other team right now which we need to build on. I'm also not sure the logistics of doing what you propose, but I certainly do want to hear more ideas and opinions.

I hate seeing all those inactive accounts also, however there is no reason to farm out our computers to activate them.  There would be no benificial reason to do so.  No matter what we did it wouldn't raise our RAC or increase our totals.  The best thing to do is to try and get new members to join and crunch SETI and try to get some of our inactive members back to crunching.

It has been my experience that folks who have no vices have very few virtues

Some are due to crunching other projects too. I got a nice run on LHC WU's, once those clear out, mine should go active again.

My preferred project is E@H. This means that I have not crunched a SETI WU for many months. However, with the E@H S5 data coming to an end shortly (maybe this month?), I have resumed SETI on one machine already, with a reduced resource share. I would guess that a lot of other members are also crunching other projects. Surely, this is the beauty of the BOINC software. As such, I do not see the relevance of inactive members in any project.

Indeed.

In fact, as I seem to remember, the whole idea that we could choose projects and run them under one platform, for one team as we saw fit was one of the main reasons this team was (re)born.

I think allowing personal choice is what matters most, and if an account is inactive for whatever reason, we should just be happy that the owner of the account has parked it with us, regardless of current status. Obviously if that is the case, they view us as the team they want to be with.

People have different priorities at different times, that's just the way it is with BOINC and online life as a whole really.

You're not supposed to agree with me! I thought this was the place for the one hour argument (j/k)

I have stopped crunching SETI for religious reasons, and will post here later (or tomorrow) when SETI is back up, a new email address and password for the account.  There is more at stake in compromising my account thusly than having an un-tatty stats page is worth.

Otherwise, I have another 5 projects which have work and battle over resources per the rules of the Marquis of BOINC.

Agreed. What the team should do is to advertise itself and try to 'recruit' more -ideally active- members. There's a big advantage: Team Starfire is a real good community with great members.
