URGENT WARNING
 (N/A)

Hi everyone, I have noticed something really dusturbing with the BOINC 5.8.8 client..It consistantly fails to commuicate with berkeley properly. It sends completed units in OK, but then fails to communicate so that Berkeley defers the comms. I have 5.8.8 on three machines, all have the same problem, including the newer machines..so they are NOT downloading units and crunching. The older clients on the other machines are communicating fine, and when i down graded one of the machines it worked fine, downloaded work and was communicating fine. It's now been 24 hours without a failed connection, but those with the 5.8.8 client have consistantly failed to communicate effectively.

This must be a bug in the system code..and could be rather damaging to production rates..I would suggest we all keep a wary eye on our crunchers if they have the newest 5.8.8 client installed.

Well, this may or may not help with your situation, Jim, but they are doing a lot of work on their network this week.
Quoted from http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/flushdns.php -

We have been undergoing some network changes recently, and will continue to be testing over the coming weeks. This has "confused" some BOINC clients that were in the process of uploading/downloading during such changes.

If you are finding your client unable to connect, first try quitting and restarting the BOINC client. If this fails, you may need to run a couple system commands to flush the pipes.

On Windows, run the following commands. You can do by clicking on the "Start" menu and then selecting "Run..." In the text box after "Open:" enter the following:

ipconfig /flushdns

Then click "OK." A blank DOS window may open for a second but will disappear on its own. Then once again click on "Start," select "Run..." and enter:

ipconfig /registerdns

Then click "OK." Then quit/restart the BOINC client.

I had the same problem on one of my machines. I put the 5.8.15 client on it and so far it is not having that problem.

Just tried updating one rig with 5.8.8 and one with 5.8.15 and both have the same problem. No big deal as I have a cache of at least 3 days work.

Paul, I checked out all the web pages for the server status before doing anything, the fact that after downgrading I cleared the problem is a clear indicator of a bug in the software, and from the posts above, it is a common one..

Re: URGENT WARNING

Today's issue is different that the one I posted about earlier.  I'm not pulling units on any machine at this time. There are a couple of threads on the seti site.

This week our servers are being patched to include the new Daylight Savings Time schedule. Certain services (web sites, data transfers, etc.) may by off-line for short periods.

Re: URGENT WARNING

Slightly OT. I recommend that you upgrade to at least 5.8.11, and if you are having communications issues unrelated to the server outage, 5.8.15(16). Build 11 fixed most all general bugs, builds after that have been tweaking the new version of CURL.
