No Promises..but..
 (N/A)

I have been talking to the HEAD IT Guy in the place where I work now and it seems they have been looking for a way to truly put their new machines through their paces when they put them together in the IT build lab. Currently they spend two weeks running each and every server as fast as possible before deployment, and the desktops get the same treatment for 1 week. The Blade Servers get run for for between 1 week for those running Linux and 4 weeks for those running Windows Server Edition or Windows Enterprise edition. At any one time the average number of machines in the IT build Lab is 40* desktops, 15* Servers (Quad Core), 5* Dual Core Workstations and 20* 4 to 16 core Blade Servers.

Our little chat was to show him BOINC, and then SETI and how the two run together, then how they get the system running at 100% CPU capacity. He was impressed as it means they can set it running and leave it, and they actually have data sets from the units for comparison, something they don't really get from their usual software. For the Workstations, which are for Graphics, he liked the idea that it can be set to display the graphics whislt pushing the CPU. The part he really liked was that it will work every part of a multicore platform equally, which really lets them get any bugs out opf the systems.

He is going to evaluate it on his machine for a week or two, as he is often away from his desk, and then make a decision as to whether to use it for their machine testing or not. The best part is I have convinced him that for security reasons they should use my account as it is not traceable back to the "Company" and so will not attract unwarranted attention.

Keep your figures crossed for the next few weeks, if he does go for it, and it's looking likely, not only will it drastically boost my own output, but the team RAC and overall output will soar as a result, especially as next month they will be testing a new batch of "Floor" Servers as they call them. Each is a 16 Xeon Dual Core 7100 Sequence CPU's Standalone Server. The spec for each is amazing..and they cost more than £340K each, and they will be testing them so they can then roll them out to replace the existing units which are starting to "show their age" (Their 3 years old 12 Xeon units!!). They have 12 floors of the building, although three of those will not get one of these units as they are used for other non-critical purposes. But even so, that is 9*16 dual core units, or 288 CPU's, each with 8MB L2 Cache ans a total of 200GB of DDR3 Memory (If I have remembered it right from the conversation). These units will all be tested at once, and run for three months before deployment as these are Super Critical bits of kit.

I may just turn back to religion and start praying about now!!

Lordy, I almost drowned in drool reading that!

I'm crossing my fingers. That would be a major boon to the team. Good luck!

Jim that sounds like a win win situation.  I hope his trial works out and they decide to use it and since it it was your idea,  you should get the credits.  Good luck and keep us posted...

It is indeed a great tool to test stability with. Constant load, memory and floating point operations all in one package. While there are more apps that are slightly better at testing stability, like Prime95, none actually do any work that is of value, save for the burnin testing.

If he needs more convincing, you could also mention the myriad of projects that can be run under the BOINC engine. Some people are more receptive to medical projects, or math projects, etc.

Done that, as I showed him the BOINC pages he could clearly see other projects, but he is intrigued by the way in SETI uses the machine, thos only other one which seems to use as much of the PC as SETI is Climate Prediction, and he can't stand the subject. I won't badger him though, after all is the Eurpean Director of IT for this outfit so it could look a bit odd for a Building Engineer to be spending too much time in him Office!! But there are Build Labs in EVERY office building they have. and that is four in the UK, three in France, five in Germany and a total of 12 others in the EU, plus he controls Russia too..that is a LOT of potential...so I currently have fingers, toes, arms and legs crossed..tried the ribs but couldn't breath!!!

Re: No Promises..but..

He's still evaluating BOINC SETI on some test machines that are not networked for security, they upload occasionally which is why some days there is a sudden spike in my output, he has named them temproarailly the same as two of my machines so that I don't get lots of redundant machines listed. I spoke to Rob the other day when on shift and he is waiting for some visitors from the US to bugger off back over there as they get very touchy about "unapproved" software on their servers etc. But to be approved can take several years of testing!! (Usually by which time it's out of date and the reason they only migrated to XP Pro last year!!)

I'll have a chat Monday when in as to what the state of play is..

I see..

How ever this is not correct, even if he names them the same, they will get listed as an own host, no matter what you do.

Since even if you only reinstall BOINC on the same machine you'll get 2 different hosts, how ever as long as the setup is 100% unchanged you can merge the 2 hosts, eventually.

How ever the slightest change in setup (or antoher computer with a different setup) and you'll not be able to merge them, like if you change only one part, a CPU, motherboard or operating system you'll not be able to merge them.

Well, I hope you'll get good news from him Monday

That can't be 100% accurate, his machines are not listing as seperate machines, I only have those that I know of, not duplicates, even my laptop, when it died from HDD failure and I reinstalled etc, is only listed once. Recently I swapped the HDD from one machine to another to save faffing about with a reinstall, that machine is totally different, Motherboard manufacturer, CPU and Memoray all different, yet it is still listed as ASRock3000, even though in reality it is an Abit Mobo with a P4D3400/4/800 (Running at 1066) and 2GB DDRII 667 installed!! (Originally it was an ASRock Mobo, P4HT3000/1/800 with 1GB DDR400)
