Quorum Change
(Canada) Modified By Kinguni on 4/10/2007 3:09:31 AM)
Saw this in the SETI Staff Blog and figured it was worthy of a repost here:

Hello, generous donators of CPU time.

As we ramp down the current data analysis to make way for the hot, fresh multibeam data, we are going to change the quorums for result validation very soon. Perhaps tomorrow. Currently we generate four results per workunit, though three are enough for validation. We're changing this to three and two.

This means less redundancy, which has the wonderful side effect of consuming less of the world's power to do our data analysis. However, be warned that this may cause us to run out of work to process from time to time over the coming weeks, especially if we lower the quorum levels even more (two and two).

There's concern that "no work available" will cause us to lose valuable participants. Maybe it won't. In any case, hopefully we can get the multibeam data going before the well drains completely.

Yep, it's going to be interesting to see who wins the race, if they get mult-beam data live or if they run out of old tapes first.

There could be a serious period of no work from SETI, everyone make sure you have a backup project ready to take over if that happens. Having a backup project will be more important than ever, even if the multi-beam data goes live in time the reduced replications may make it possible for us to crunch faster then they can create tasks.

One should always have a backup project or two, even if they are set to .1. My current favourites are Rosetta@home and NanoHive@Home, although the latter is not likely to have work at times.

We'll see. If SETI runs out of WUs I will relocate my computing power to any project the team wants. Just let me know in time.

The point of this team, and the fun part, is, you can crunch any project you want to.  Find something that interests you, we're not here to tell anyone what to crunch and when .

I know, I know. But I also know that there are projects the team needs more power. I am free to crunch for any projects IF there are no more WUs from SETI.
