Figures for a QX6700??
 (N/A)

OK, I have had a mad moment, I have ordered a Core 2 Extreme Quad core CPU (QX6700) along with a very nice Abit board and 4GB of Corsair DDRII..yes they are matched pairs :) and all the other stuff I need to create a nice PC..I need a main machine for AutoCad stuff and the like anyway. Along with this I have ordered a Toshiba Tablet PC with a Core 2 2.13GHz CPU and 1GB of DDRII.

What sort of processing can I expect from these two with the optimised apps installed?

By the way, keep your fingers crossed, I have opted for the finance option as it is something over £2500 ($4700), but I know that my credit rating is pants at the moment..i only hope that their quest for profit blinds them to things that usually hurt me..Like I pay my bills on time!!

Man, I know I sound like I'm constantly raining on your parade. I try not to, I just want to share what I've learned from my machines, and our group of overclocker's machines, as we share our experiences in the team IRC channel with many combinations of memory, motherboards and C2D's and one C2Quad.

That being said, to answer your questions, my laptop and nutcase's c2d's are doing about 1200 RAC with slightly slower cpu's. Our E6600's are doing about 2600 RAC @34/3500 Mhz. Camelot One's Q6600 is currently at 3,280 RAC and climbing @3466 MHz. I've followed results on some highly clocked quads, and indeed, they basicaly double the RAC of the dual cores, in comparable 965 boards and memory.

We're finding out that memory is not all that important like it was in the long pipelined Pentium 4 series. Running the memory async with the cpu yields no appreciable improvements in RAC. With most DDR2 available now, running them sync at E6600's 370MHz fsb with tight timings and good ram yields the best results.

We've been having trouble with Abit boards. The board designer that had such sweet boards like the NF2, KX333, etc. moved to DFI several years ago, and designed their Infinity and Lan Party boards. Abit's current boards are mediocre design, and their bios coders are extremely slow getting new chipsets mature. I've long been a Abit fan, but have pretty much dropped them in the last 6 months, I currently use Gigabyte 965 DS3/S3 boards. Others are using Asus 965 boards at a bit of a premium.

Intel is due for a big price drop on the C2D and C2Q series next Monday, saving some $300 US on the quads. Several of us are planning on purchasing a Quad or two at that time.

Thanks for the feedback Paul, some of it is moot now as I had an email when I awoke saying that I had been refused the credit, so as I thought my credit score works against me as I pay my Bills on time and don't actually owe anyone any money!! Go Figure!

Anyway, I have not given up on the Quad, I will simply put the cash on one side, along with the rest i have, and buy it outright in about a months time..so by then the price will have dropped and I will actually save some cash too. I have ordered the Toshiba regardless and simply paid for it with my debit card, that should be here in the next few days. What i will do in the meantime is some seriosu research into the best quad core boards about and get that, I am not overly bothered about the overclock abilities, afterall if I have a nice tight and fast board, whats the point of the overclock, so I may look at Supermicro, I used to use their dual cpu boards in the early days of SETI and they flew, so it may be worth a look..who knows..they may even make a dual quad board!! Now that would be very tempting!!

Good luck with the savings Jim, I hope you'll get it together eventually !

I'm sure it'll be a great cruncher what ever you do, how ever to wait a month for the CPUs prises to drop doesn't seem like a bad idea

I think your right there Marie, it may seema  pain to wait another month for the beastie to be born, but if I can save £300+ on the cost of the machine, that can only be a good thing..afterall if all the prioces drop then I should be able to upgrade one of the P4HT machines to a Dual Core with money. Then i would be getting even more bank for the buck...
