S@H Outage update (was- Thumper Lives!)
(N/A) Modified By paul on 5/16/2007 2:51:28 PM)
The server hosting the master science database, thumper, which is a relatively new Sun machine with 24 Sata drives attached, is down indefinitely. Apparently the data is intact, but the motherboard can't see the drives. They're on the phone with Sun trying to get a replacement as of yesterday. What this means is that the splitters and assimilators can't talk to the project database, so our main concern ATM is we can't get any new work. This is going to be an extended outage, as it's been down for a day, has not been fixed yet (no ETA on DB restart), and once it does restart, there will be a huge backlog of people trying to get work.

More info in the news section here- http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/

Stay tuned for further developments.

this is why I like to have 3-4 days of work sitting on my machines. Hopefully, they can get it back together in that time if not then I still have rosetta kicking up afterward

Rosetta and WCG were due for a little more of my cpu time.

Had a machine crash on me at work, and after rebuilding it, I just put it on WCG for now.  I've left that project idle for too long.  Might be putting another one up tomorrow on WCG too.

I need to check my machines and see which are coming to the end of their cache, if any are running out then I will likely choose another project to run for a while if Berkeley remains Borked..

Make sure whichever you choose for backup is reliable. There are a couple of projects that don't fit the bill.

I'm out of WUs on my work PC and connected to QMC as a backup... My home PCs have about one days cache still...
Unfortunately SETI beta is also affected by this so you can't have that as a backup, they use the same servers...

Whole SETI is down now, even the forum and the main web page, everything is completely shut and no words on when anything will be solved

I would recommend steering clear of E@H as a back-up project, since they are having some "issues" over there. I will be investigating Rosetta at the weekend, if S@H is not better by then.

Fortunately, I hold big caches on my machines, since I do suffer connection problems, for reasons I will not go into.

Fuzzy, are you 100% certain of that, I have transfered a number of my machines over the E@H today, and there has been no problems and they have all downloaded enough work to keep them going for at least a week..

Yes, there have been issues. A little searching on their boards will tell you a bit about them, computational and unrecoverable errors. And the current WU's are very long running.

I can't seem to upload any S@H results. Is anyone else having a problem? Happened about the same as the seti server quitting.

Didn't have that problem, but their servers are slow in accepting results right now. I'm right out of SETI work right now however.

After not having anything go up for a day & a half, it just uploaded 8 results. I guess all I had to do was post about it.

What a helpful team!

Think it'll be next week if we're lucky before Berkeley is generating new WU's. Meanwhile, there are the odd WU's going out, resends they be. Got one on the old P3.

My brother was telling me that he was getting huge WU's (32 hours on an AMD 4600+ dual core) they do have small WU's but I believe you have to specifically ask not to get the large WU's in your preferences.

There is no controll over which size task you get at E@H. There are no new shorter ones being created at this time. They may come back, and there will probably be a round of optimisations so the average crunch time will probably rise a bit more then go back down some. How much it drops depends mostly on if and how many of the short tasks they need for this run. If past runs are any indication when the optimized apps start coming out we should see a 20% to 40% drop in crunch times, it may be lower the main optimizer at that project is on the project staff now so his skills were probably used in the current app.

edit: Optimized apps come from the project at E@H, no need to bother looking for one or setting up that annoying app_info.xml file.

Re: S@H- no new work, get your backup projects going...

Yes, it's a good idea to run a project with short WUs as a backup, I found QMC had too long WUs also so I run only Spinhenge now on all PC's. I'm totally out of SETI WUs, *buggers*
...

anyways, at least there's been some update on the fix now...

This is from SETI main page...

Great news! Sun Microsystems is coming to the rescue and will be replacing our inoperative science data base server. They are preparing the machine now and will be rushing it to us on Monday. Once we have the machine up and the database recovered, we can start sending work out again.

So if they get the new server Monday, well, it may be online again late next week ... maybe !

Re: S@H- no new work, get your backup projects going...

/actually I changed my mind again, I changed to RCN because they have "fair" credits and you always get the credit you claim as they have a minimum quorum of only 1. I never got more than a third what I claimed on Spinhenge...
...also , strange enough it seems like I've somehow managed to get some SETI Beta Enhanced WUs on 2 computers

...well not AP, but that is just as well, you don't get credit for AstroPulse WUs at all since the validation process isn't finished for that project ...

Since everyone is having connection problems, wu's are expiring. So Berkeley is sending them out again, since the project just assumes that wu's are not being returned.

Look for this to extend well into next week, they are receiving the replacement box, but there should be several days of configging, loading the raid array, mounting the 24 SATA drives, etc.

This is assuming the data is intact. And also just my guess... cool.gif

Actually no, well, could be, but my WUs are brand new, there is no results on them yet.

If they'd expired then they should have a few completed results and one or more with the state "Over - No reply" but these are brand new... a few examples:

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/workunit.php?wuid=452061

http://setiweb.ssl.berkeley.edu/beta/workunit.php?wuid=452283

And they come in batches, not one every now and then...
