Calling it a day..
 (United Kingdom)

Hi all, not been about for a while due to technical difficulties..I live in a western country that takes five times longer to connect someone to ADSL that a 3rd world country..!!

Anyway, due to the extended outage caused by Berkeley's misfortunes and by my own circumstances, I have had time to spend on other projects, and in that time I have re-evaluated the reasons why I do SETI. I will be commiting to another project in the near future, one with real science behind it and real benefits, as implied by a previous thread asking for people to step forward to support it. It is my intention to put my full support behind this project and commit my resources, as limited as they are now, to this, as such I will no longer participate in SETI at Home, more than 8 years is enough anyway, it's time to evolve onto something new.

I will, of course stay a member here, both in the team and the forums, and will keep members updated as I can as to the progress being made, so that on launch we can have one, if not the first, teams on the project.

I hope you can all understand where I am coming from here, I have never been convinced of the projects' scientific merit and arguments and when coupled to other factors, simply makes taking part untenable for me personally, but it has been fun, and I hope the new project is as much fun once it's up and running.

Stay Tuned.

Jim

Well you know that around here we value everyone no matter what they choose to run, and even if they choose just to hang out. It's amazing that out "alien software", as some ignorant putz from another team put it, is capable of running projects with such a wide range of scientific merit.

This team supports many projects. Feel free to chose which ones you want to devote your computers to.

In most cases I like to put the resource share to 1 for projects that I am no longer that fond of rather than completely abandon them. That way I rarely see them, but I still stay somewhat current.

We all have our reason to crunch what we crunch.

I'm not saying anything about it.

How ever then of course I don't have to be afraid you'll stomp me anytime soon...

First pf all welcome back, Jim.

Good luck to you and your new project. As I told before I am in too, so if the project needs power just give me a shout.

As always, should you or any of your Computing Force be exploited or infected, the TSWB Community will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This message will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck, Jim.

I've been off Seti since the last major screwup.  Happily crunching Rosetta on most machines but I have 2 and my laptop that are running a ton of different projects each right now, so I actually have rac in something like 22 different projects.

This post had me kindof wondering a bit why you would explain to us the withdrawl from Seti. THis is what this team is all about, running what we want. Yeah, most of us probably started with Seti, but this is a BOINC club first. Or, a distributed computing club, if you'd rather, where you just pick your project and run it.

I've stayed with the majority of my fleet with Seti, moving resources here and there as the call came out for support in other projects. I've made several attempts to branch out to other projects with the majority of the fleet, but have yet to really get organized enough to pull it off.

I'd venture to say most of us long time Seti guys have lost some of that drive here of late, with the problems Berkeley has faced. Many, like me, have used that break as an opportunity to really explore other projects again, or in more depth.

Gotta hand it to the staff at Berkeley. They have led the world in distributed computing, paving the way to the wide range of projects we see today, and especially for implementing the BOINC engine for the rest of the scientific community to use.

Well to be honest I have not run much SETI at all since the Berk out, with the shut down of pretty much all my fleet I have ran Rosetta seems pretty stable and Einstein is another I run on occasion.

So no need to go anywhere just switch over until you find something you like

Things in your rearview mirror may be larger than they appear
