Reset Spinhenge
 (N/A)
Got about 20 emails from the Spinhenge project today in the span of an hour or so. They read-
 Dear User,

you runs currently a buggy application.

PLEASE make a reset of our project to get the right version of our apllication. The one you run could calculate wrong results.

If you didn't run the application with the version 3.01 and have already loaded the version 2.42 all is good. If not please use version 2.42 instead.

Thanks,

Thomas Hilbig

Re: Reset Spinhenge

OK, so the official word is-
version 3.00 und 3.01 are the first testversions of the spinhenge application with the new screensaver and implanted checkpointing.
they run but they have big bugs! so for example, they give wrong creditdatas.
shortly after their release we called them back and started a intern betatest.
but some user / hosts got these clients automaticly and are still running them.
we told in the project news and here in the board several times to reset the project to get the official version!
...it is sad, lots of user did'nt listen and are still using these buggy clients!
today we had a little accident by writing them via email...
the mail went out to all user witch sendet results during the last week.
not one mail per user, some got a lot...
we are sorry for this!
please excuse us!!!

btw: a new version with implanted checkpointing and the new screensaver is shortly for comming out, we do the last tests to make the application nearly prefect!
the same is happend to the new linux application!

regards
Miko

So apparently this has been going on for a while, but IMO, handled poorly. BOINC has procedures they can use to roll back buggy versions, I would think. At least contact everyone, and don't rely on a message board or site announcement to ensure your users get the message.

Unfortunately the only way to roll back a buggy science app is to rerelease it with a new version number. BOINC will always use the highest version number available.
