Hyperthreaded question
 (United States)
In running BOINC on my work machine, I came accross an puzzling issue. The computer (P4 3.0GHz with hyperthrading turned on) does 2 Predictor WUs in roughly the same time as my Sempron 3400+ (10,000 seconds). The Sempy gets roughly 30 points per WU. The P4 gets about 17 points per WU. So over the course of  a day the Sempron will do about 9 WUs and pull down 270 credits, while the P4 will knock down 17 WUs and earn 289.

What puzzles me is shouldn't, given the same time to complete a WU, the P4 earn the same 30 points per WU.

Or do I have this whole thing worked out wrong?

Not familiar with Pedictor wu's, but if they are all roughly the same size and take roughly the same time, then they should be claiming roughly the same credit. Irst, I would check to see which version of Boinc Manager you have on each machine, since Crunch3r's 5.50 does have some optimizing stuff built in.

I have 5.4.11 on all three boxes. I've uninstalled/reinstalled BOINC, but it comes right back to giving half-credit (roughly).

And its Rosetta, not Predictor (duh).

Ahh Rosetta, makes more sense.  Credit for workunits is not a constant.  It depends how many models are completed and returned with the result.  Their credits are based more on the contribution to the science and they handle credits different than other projects.  They have a pretty lengthy description of this at the Rosetta site.   SOme workunits are simpler than others and more models get completed.  Id look inside your results to see how many models were completed.

Could there be something on the machine sucking up cycles?

I'm not entirely positive that's it. The two computers process similar WUs, each  with 1 structure built 11-23 times.

When I get into work tomorrow, I'm going to switch to another project (QMC) and see what happens.

Re: Hyperthreaded question

I think it has more to do with the hyperthreading than the project. Even though it is taking the same amount of CPU time the AMD is using that time more efficiently (fewer cycles per instruction). If the AMD number is similar to the speed of the intel processor then they should be producing similar amounts of credit per day.

Re: Hyperthreaded question

You may be onto something. I set the profile to default (which is to use only 1 processor) before I left work yesterday. The yellow results are what got returned with only 1 "processor", the non-colored returns on the bottom are using 2 processors. The times are the roughly the same but the credit is about 40% more.
