Re: New PC build  (United States)
try this system:

more memory, larger hard drive and more powerful video card (and it will be a Huge RAC cruncher). AMD X6 is just as powerful as the i7:

Re: New PC build  (United States)
I get about a $13 difference after going with a different case for each scenerio (Cooler Master HAF 932) and going with 2 WD 640GB sata6 drives (for RAID1). So you think AMD is the better route than Intel?

Re: New PC build  (United States)
They quit buying I7's (I never bought one) and are now building X6 systems. Same processing punch as the I7's, I sold off all my fleet and am now just running mostly all x6's. I also reused PSU's and ddr2, have been using Gigabyte's 785 mATX boards, Under load and overclocked to 3500 mhz, they pull just 170 watts, a bit less than the Q6600's and much less than a comparable i7 system.

Re: New PC build  (United States)
I'm kinda worried about the upgrade options on the AMD side as i'm not as familiar with them right now. I know with the LGA 1366 sockett, i can atleast upgrade further down the line if i want too. Is the AM3 socket the latest and greatest AMD has to offer?

Re: New PC build  (United States)
if you have an AM2+ board you can upgrade to AM3 CPU without any problems(perhaps a bios update) I wouldnt worry about getting 6 Gb of ram either. AMD doesnt play that game with the RAM if anything get 4 2 gb sticks if your mobo can handle the sticks.

AMD made a conscious effort to make their newer AM3 CPU's back compatible to the AM2/AM2+ mobos. something you'll not see in Intel chips. I'm betting they'll continue with the excellent customer service

if you OC an AMD you'll want to get a decent HSF. I have a Coolermaster that ran me $50 including an extra fan. keeps my 940 nice and cool.

In the near future I'll be getting a 1090 so I can play like the big boys.

As far as the GPU , An nvidia 460 will be great for crunching seti. less than great on the other projects. a 5850 or 5870 will out crunch the best Nvidia card on all the other projects. I have the lunatics seti MB and AP apps running on my PC. the MB is about 4X slower than the Nvidias. The AP can finish an unblanked WU in 2 hours. up to 8 hours on a severely blanked WU.

Re: New PC build  (United States)
I haven't bought anything yet, that's why i'm looking at my options. I was thinking about aftermarket cooling after nutcase suggested the AMD cpu.

Re: New PC build  (United States)
you'll be cooking with gas in no time. I hope you got an ATI card for crunching. the Nvidias are great on seti and 1 PG project otherwise the ATI's just dominate
