Proposed Specs for A New Cruncher
 (United Kingdom)

I have just bought a new house. Naturally, I also need a new computer to go with it (amongst other items). Fortune seems to have smiled on me since I just got $20k back-pay. I am looking to spend about $5-6k of this on a new desktop. What are the best options for a good cruncher for S@H & E@H.

Note that setting up numerous cheap self-built systems is not practical - my wife would not buy into that.

I was leaning to a system built on the Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800. Is this a good idea?

FD.

Is that a trick question?

Certainly if you have that much to spend thats the way to go, along with a 975X board and 2 gb of Crucial Ballistix ddr2 1000.

Why do you make me think of such things

I think I'll walk away now and wait for Paul, Xaak, or nutcase to chime in.

I suppose the real question is AMD or Intel?

I would go with the E6600.. there is not enough performance increase with the X6800 and you will save a bunch of money.

If you have that much to spend, and want to put it into one machine, what about a dual woodcrest(Xeon) sytem? That would be a RAC monster.

Agree with Nutcase, the X6800 series doesn't appear to be much more than a little faster than the E6700, with unlocked multi.

Couple of questions, do you game, and are you going to build it yourself?

I am an occasional gamer. Unfortunately, I do not have the time (or ability) for self-build, since I have quite a senior position in a MNC. Hence money is not a problem, but time is really a problem!!

Another vote for Intel Core 2 Duo E6600. Best bang for buck, with nice OC possibilities. I'm waiting for Paul to get his hands on one to put it through its paces. :)

Monarch Computer Systems does a good job of building custom pc's. They have a good rep for checking everything out before it ships

Thanks for the info. However, I am not in the US. There are similar companies in Europe, which I am now checking out.

Sorry, FD, quite a bit of us build our own, hence the lack of resouces for OEM machines. However, if I were to buy a prebuilt, it would definitely be based on the new Core Duo 2 seies of processors. While having more horsepower under the hood over the current champ, AMD X2 series, they also run just as cool as them, much cooler & draws much less power than the P4 series they are succeeding...

Sorry dude, it was a paper release for the Core Duo 2, with just a handful of cpu's alloted to retailers. I was only able to snatch up a lowly E6300 with a paltry 2MB l2 cache...

It's been up and running for the better part of a week, seen here- http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2580953 I'm waiting for some new ram to come in, I really can't spare any of the 3 very fast modules I currently have, they are installed in 3 D's crunching their little hearts out. Already, just running 2650 mhz, the little E6300 is outcrunching my D's @4 Ghz by about 25%. There's more left in the chip, the ram is holding it back...

Thanks for the input Paul. From having a good look around what is available for the money I am willing to spend, a Dual Xeon Workstation looks my best option.

I would love to build my own, but simply put, I do not have the time.
