I'm getting bored around the house, and.....
 (United States)
I'm thinking about building a "cheap" rackmount system just for crunching,  Any suggestions on parts, or things to look out for?  Maybe even a place (other then newegg) to find parts I'm looking at not breaking the bank, but starting small with room to grow, but at the same time getting more bang for the buck.

Come to the chat room (linky on the right side of the page).  It's not like we don't have a zillion builders and oc-ers on the team.

Well the computers we are building whose sole purpose is to crunch is not much different than one you would build for yourself, save for maybe more memory and a hot gpu.

There's nothing out there that comes close to the power of an Intel Core 2 Quad. Sure it cost $280, but you double your output for just a little more money. 2 GB of good ddr2 memory is dirt cheap for months now, can be had for $50-60. Motherboard, we've been loving the Gigabyte DS3 line, wether it be 965P or P35 chipset based. Asus boards work well, too.

I'll post more later when I have a bit of time. There are some pitfalls you'll need to avoid from the start. As Cyberschnook said, there's a group of 7-9 of us that OC our quads in the 3300-3600 mHz range 24/7, that hang out in the IRC channel. Last I heard our java chat client didn't play nice with the last big JRE release, 1.6 I think. There's always mirc, chatzilla, Trillian, etc. etc. that require a bit more IRC knowledge, tho.

Co-owner, the Group of 10 100 200 300

Java is fine now actually. Defrag popped in for a while last night.
