Need suggestions...Quad core IGP Motherboard
(N/A) Modified By Camelot One on 12/10/2007 3:52:52 PM)

I've finally decided to replace my AMD 4800+ 939 "media server" with an Intel quad. The box doesn't have a monitor on it, doesn't feed a TV, it just runs on the network. So the requirements are:

Onboard SATA x6 - I could get by with 4 if absolutely necessary.

IGP - space constraints don't allow for a separate video card. Doesn't matter how crappy the IGP is.

Support for the Q6600 out of the box (no bios update required to post)

Supports DDR2 667 - since I have some on hand

4 bolt CPU water block mounting holes. (I thought this was standard anymore, but the nVidia 7150s don't seem to have them)

onboard Gigabit ethernet

I know I'm not going to get the performance of an X38 board in an IGP, which for this application is ok.

Suggestions? Even as broad as which chipsets to look at?

I've used both of Asus's G33 boards, P5K-V ATX and P5K-VM mATX with good results, save for overclocking. Problem with boards with onboard video, is they seem to run pretty skimpy 3 phase power, perhaps even mediocre VR's. This leads to a severe droop when clocking over 3Ghz. Which may or may not be fine with you. Note that I have not tried a quad in them, both are running 4x00 cpu's. Also, for the first time, that I can remember, anyway, bus speeds actually lock with the G31 based boards

I do hear Gigabyte's G33 boards fair a bit better than the Asus's in the overclocking dept. They've had some really fine c2d/q boards the last few years, I own about 6 of them. Have yet to try any of their all in one boards, though.

edited for chipset info

Funny, I'm starting to look to do the same thing with my 939 4400+, although I think I might wait another month or 2 for budget reasons.

Right now leaning toward the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 (Rev. 2).  8x SATA, RAID5 = lots of storage.

I'm not as well versed with performance and overclocking, so I am unsure if this board fits your other criteria.

EDIT: Just realized it doesn't have IGP, sorry.

Well I found this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131237

Its a G35 IGP, meets all the requirements, but it's an Asus. And my luck with Asus has never been good.

I have an older version of that board (P5LD2-VM R.2) on which I am running an E6600.  It's been pretty solid since I built it in fall 2006. Unfortunately they aren't planning to add quad-core support for it so I will have to replace it if I want to add more cores...  ugh.

Here it is:

I hear you. Asus boards are always teaked fairly well with their default settings. Great boards, just need to do some serious teaking with them, On top of that they use AMI bios, which I'm not too found of.

Have you checked this board out- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128053 Looks to be a higher end mATX board with all the features you want. What is noticable is what looks to be 6 phase power.

Yeah that looks about perfect. Is there much difference between the G33 and G35?

The little bit I read up on them, Northbridge is the same, southbridges can vary. G31 is paired with the ich7 SB, G33, the newer ich8 SB, etc. Giga's Ultra durable 2 level is where they include 6 phase power. A feature I've yet to see on a IGP board, glad it made it to this line. I may try one out myself.
