Anyone own a Phenom yet?
(United States) Modified By Jack Shaftoe on 12/12/2007 7:40:23 AM)
Just curious if anyone has picked up one of the 2 Phenom models out and if they have any thoughts.  They are very well priced, I am thinking about saving a few bucks for my next rebuild.  I also like to maintain a balance between Intel and AMD for what I own.

AM2+ boards seem to be hard to come by though.  Not too many on the market yet.

I'm not an AMD guy anymore, but take this as a general suggestion for any new processor, especially with new motherboard and chipsets.  Let other people go thru the bleeding edge headaches and wait at least 3 or 4 months after the motherboards become widely available before adapting any brand new technology.

An alternative, and I'm not trying to push you into another Intel if you don't want to go there, is waiting until January for the new intel quads.  They have more cache and are fairly attractively priced, and will run on most tried and true x35 chipset motherboards.

FYI (from our chat room):

Phenom TLB (AMD #298) Erratum da bug!

Phenom TLB Patch Impact da fix--only (!?!?) 14% performance hit.

Good advice, Xaak.  Just curious is all.

Looks like both Intel and AMD have some kinks to work out.  Thanks "Anonymous".

I keep switching back and forth between what I want to do - have a total Intel farm or keep an AMD box somewhere.

Are there going to be 45nm Intel chips that are under $500 in Q1 2008?  If there are, maybe I go that route.

P.S.  Firefox 2.0 seems to be having some trouble with this forum.  I keep getting "unresponsive script" errors that make it hang when I try to post (before I can type into this text box).

This forum is not FF-friendly; it likes IE.  Using IE Tabs in FF helps somewhat, but not entirely.

Yeah, here's the pricing.  Mail order should only be slightly higher.

Yeah, it's a royal PITA. I think most FF users here use the IE tab addon for FF 2.x. I don't, and use the workaround of tabbing over to the text box as soon as it loads. Awkward, and I forget half the time, but I would rather do that than load another browser, especially IE7. I've gotten so used the FF that IE7 is clumsy and clunky feeling to me.

That bug has been here since Gary started the forum over a year ago. It's known to the DotNetNuke people, but no fix yet...

At first I just thought it was me, then I got to work and it did the same thing. Glad to know it wasn't just me. I can survive with Basic Text for now.

Having fun thinking about ways to spend my money next year. Here's hoping my annual review makes it *early* next year.
