Need some suggestions on Qcore parts
 (United States)
OK I am going to replace my desktop thought I would build off the Q6600 Kentsfield decent price at newegg.

Any ideas on a board, I am going to run a separate graphics card so OBV is not necessary I am not rich but will pay for a solid board that can handle DC pretty good.

Not in a rush but I do need to do this soon.

Will need an idea on a PSU and memory for the board.

Thanks
Clif

The new penryns will be out shortly, and they run cooler and from what I can tell faster at a given clock speed.

I have the xeon 2.5ghz penryn running stock, and from what I can tell it crunches about 5% slower than my g0 clocked at 3.15 ghz.  I'm not sure how much of that is the quad channel memory on the xeon though.  They're slated to be not much more than the g0's either

Despite rumors that the new 45nm chips being delayed, Tank Guys have started their pre-order list for the new Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66 Ghz (Yorkfield) https://www.tankguys.com/product_info.php?products_id=1791    Still looks like a Jan. 20 release date.

I used their preorder system for my first G0 quad, cost me a few dollars, but I got one as soon as they were released through the channels.

Clif, I know you do a bit of mild overclocking from time to time. If you do plan on any, I'd suggest a board with 6 phase power, the 3 and 4 phase boards droop too much for my tastes with the quads. Gigabyte has been making some great Core 2 boards, and the price is right. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128050  Anything with Giga's "Ultra Durable 2 @ Ultra Cooling", it seems, has 6 phase power, solid caps and better NB cooling.

On the Asus side, they have stated their P5B line will have a bios update for the 45nm chips, and their nrwer P5K line. Starting with the P5KE, you'll get much the same as Giga, better cooling, more phase power http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131225

Since the Core 2 first came out, those 2 brands are about all the IRC group prefers, we've found them to be pretty solid.

I wonder if the Q6600 will drop in price significantly when the Penryns are available?

Amazing that the pre-order is only $350 for the Q9450. I would have expected a steeper markup.

Paul, how can you tell the difference here?

"I think we're on the verge of a major climate shift. The government has to start making long term preparations now."
"Jack, all you have is a theory."
"Well then give me the mainframe and let me prove it!!!"

I don't know if the prices will drop at all.  Judging from the Xeon market, which is pretty much a mirror of the consumer market, the older series xeons haven't dropped in price yet, and the penryn Xeons have been out a few months already.

Edit:

You can usually tell by reading the literature on the manufacturer's website.  With the gigabyte intel chipset boards, the DSx series and the DQx series all have 6 phase power regulation.  Other manufacturers you'll have to check the specs.

Re: Need some suggestions on Qcore parts

I can't offer much in the way of a suggestion on which board to buy, as I haven't found it myself yet.

But I will offer a very strong recommendation AGAINST the Asus P5N32-E SLI (nvidia 680i) board. I am now on my 3rd, each with it's own issues. This third one has been the best of the bunch, it stays running, so long as I don't try to use the top PCI-E slot. And because it's not the same issue between the boards, my only conclusion is that the quality checks on this model are done by chinese toy makers.
