Mom needs a new PC -- Help!
 (United States)
Alright guys, my mom needs a new computer, and it has been awhile since I have speced out parts for a build. She already has a nice 19" lcd monitor, wireless keyboard/mouse, speakers, and printer so, we are talking box only here. The primary uses are the usual; internet/email, digital pictures, cd/dvd burning, in other words, nothing heavy duty. Of course, it will be Boincing, but I'm thinking no overclocking, unless the extra cost for suitable components is negligible. I need to keep the price fairly reasonable. I need advice on everything; case(black, big quiet fan), mobo, cpu(thinking entry conroe), memory(1 gig), graphics(possibly onboard), hard drive(around 250GB), PSU, DVD burner, etc... So, what do you guys think? Thanks!
Heath

I have an Antec Sonata case, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it. It's black, pleasing to the eye, and built solid. It has a 120mm exhaust fan in the back, and an effective air duct at the front with a washable filter. I have yet to find a single dustbunny inside it. The internal drive bays have rubber grommets to cut hd noise -- I never hear them. If it weren't for the extra 120mm fan I added, this case would be virtually silent. And I see they've released the Sonata II, which looks to be even better.

If it's just going to ba an internet machine, why not go bargain basement at Newegg like a nice P4 /w HT or an AMD64? Also I recommend Zalman for quiet cooling. Even if it does have a fan, like a CPU cooler, the fans are uber quiet.

That's a possibility. I generally am of the mindset to shoot as high as possible, to stave off obsolensence for as long as possible. But, considering the real world use, even something like you suggest would serve this purpose for quite some time. On the other hand, I hate to miss an opportunity to build as powerful a machine as possible for it's other intended purpose, crunching for me, which is compensation for all of the tech and software support that I have been providing, and am certain to continue providing, lol.

Also keep in mind that the Conroes are more power efficient than the older processors, so anything you save up front on a cheaper processor will likely be spent on extra power consumption over time.

You also need to know if she is going to leave it on 24/7 or only turn it on when browsing/checking email/looking at pics/etc like my parents do... if so, no sense spending the money building a killer cruncher if it's never gonna be on for more than a few hours a week.  Sans video card (remember to get a mb with AGP), going with the previously suggested cpus, you could easily build it on the cheap with a DL DVD burner since those are cheap these days...
