Price Spread on OEM & retail
 (United States)
I'm thinking about replacing my socket A primary computer (AthlonXP @ 2300 MHz) with a nice dual core setup. Most likely won't do anything until the early March (which for some reason is when I do all my computer upgrades). Just looking at prices when the spread between the OEM & retail versions of the Athlon64 X2 5000+ struck me as way off. $190 more for a heatsink & 2 more years om the warrantee? Yikes. I'm used to seeing a 20% spread on retail over OEM, not a 58% spread.

And,yes,  I know the Core 2 Duos are a better buy, especially in this price range.

Not a lot of places stock the 5000+ OEM.

The screenshot was from Newegg
Chiefvalue (not surprisingly) is similar OEM = $332.49, retail =$524.49
TigerDirect is OEM = $450, retail =$500
NextDayPC (I've never heard of 'em) OEM = $327.27, retail = $360.67 (damn good price, but then again, I've never heard of them)
ExcaliberPC OEM = $788.29. retail = $773.21 (out of stock, at those prices, I bet they're flying off the shelves!)

Doing a search for the retail CPU (ADA5000CUBOX) it seems its selling at many places for mid to low $300's,

Chumbo has it for $340
Provantage has it for $332
Buy.com has it for 309

Of course, none of them have it. Only those selling it for $500+ have it (Newegg, TigerDirect, Chiefvalue, Amazon)

Gesundheit!

We'll see what CPUs & prices are available in March. We may see Kentsfield quads out as well as AMD's 4X4, although I gotta think two cores is all I'll be able to afford. One never knows.
