direct 3d and direct draw gf cards ?
 (N/A)
Hm, a bit off topic, but it is hard ware related.

My son says he need a new graphic card so he can play the newest games,
he says he need a card that supports direct 3d and direct draw
so I was wondering if anyone here knows which graphic cards support this ?

I don't play at all so I have no idea about these things...

What kind of graphics slot does the computer have and what's your budget?

Budget will be hard to figure--she's in Sweden.

That leaves which games the kid wants to play and what card most of 'em like.

Re: direct 3d and direct draw gf cards ?

what games, I'm not sure actually... but like GTA 5 I think he said he can't play and also SIMS the latest...

I'm not sure what others and he is not home right now so I can't ask.

Budget, well, not a lot but I'm a h*ll of a deal-maker so I can find second hand stuff very cheap.

It doesn't have to be the absolutely best, as long as it's sufficient.

I just need to know what to look for ???

I'm no expert, but I've gotten the same card by my purchase, and again as a hand-me-down (different computers and very different financial circumstances); both times the card was nVIDIA GeForce MX420.

Now, the first time, I choose it because it was compatible with America's Army game (you may recall this made a big splash at BBR/DSLR), and about the least expensive of the cards listed that the game would play on.  ATI Radeon cards weren't supported.

So my suggestion is to get a prioritized list of games according to your son's favorites, and check which cards are compatible with each game.  After the up-front work, either the answer will be obvious, or the debate over which games get sacrificed will begin. :)

Direct3D and Direct Draw are parts of DirectX. we just need to know what version of DirectX he needs and we can find something cheap and reliable from there.

As I said, he is not home right now, he is sleeping over at his GF (he is 18 now *lol*)

I just thought as a X-mas present he may want to have a better graphics card)...

but I'll ask him tomorrow ..

Right now he have a GeForce FX5200 128mb.

Yes this much I have understood, but the graphics card have to support it also for it to work ...

I think he have directX9 something... how ever I don't remember, I'll check more closely.

//I'll edit this post in a while... I'll check what version of DirectX he have and update it if necessary with the latest one. //

Ok,now I have checked... I did use the dxdiag to check what version he have and that is the latest version, the 9.0C.

and it also had this direct3d and directdraw test and it  passed them just fine,

I could see all the boxes and bunching stuff on the screen, so it does support it...

Either he is pulling my leg, just to get a better GF card or then he have misunderstood the problem.

He have "only"  a Celeron 2,4 MHz computer and maybe it is because of that he thinks it is too slow...

So infact it might be better if I invested in a faster CPU instead for him ...

Celeron 2,4 MHz or GHz?  I think you mean GHz.  And a better graphics card than I have.  I would check that he has the latest drivers for that card, and get him something else for Christmas. :)

Of course, this is free advice, and worth exactly what you paid for it. :)

Yes, of course I meant GHz (or 2400 MHz) ...

Ok, thanks for the advice, I also start to think it's not the graphics card anyway.

and I'll see if I can find any new drivers for it

The latest driver from nVIDIA is 9.1.4.7.

There's also a driver showing on Microsoft's updates, but I think MS cobbled it instead of  nVIDIA, and the number is lower.

Well the latest I could find was 81.85_forceware_winxp2k_english_whql.exe

but they worked really fine though.

He said to thank you and the 3D games works just fine now, he was so surprised when all it was was to update the drivers and so was I actually.

Thanks for the advice, this thing actually worked out... :o)

You're very welcome!

I'd forgotten that he and I don't have exactly the same GeForce cards, so you can ignore my 9.1.4.7 version number--it's for a much older card.

Re: direct 3d and direct draw gf cards ?

There are games that are crippled by the CPU... there are also games that are crippled by the GPU.  On the other hand there are games games crippled by BOTH (believe it or not, originally Quake3 was one of these and was why it was a benchmarch for so many years... appears perhaps F.E.A.R. may have taken this role)

So the question is... what games does he want/need? DirectX or Open3D? (these two standards show the largest variences between cards)  This day, if I were playing games (and I do) I would NOT consider a card with less than 512mb onboard mem for ANY purpose.

As far as what card supports Direct3D and DirectDraw - they all do, at least basically, some are better than others, but almost all can do it (the ones that don't are #1 not purposed for what you want and #2 no where near your price point)- its a Microsoft Standard and only idiot companies wouldn't at least do SOME support for it.  (not that its a particularly good standard, but since >90% folks run Microsoft... not a bad idea to support it)
.

well, the problem here is that he is NOT the computer expert in this family, but I am.

... an I am far too old to play games, at least mostly ...
though I like some old stu*d games..

well there is some other reasons for that also, but mainly,
I'm the brains in this family (though I'm a girl and all...(measured IQ of 140+ and all *lol*))

and he is always assuming I'll take care of things like this for him ("among other things like economics *sigh*)

and he'll probably learn to regret it someday but, not for now... *smiles* you have to love your children ... don't you ?¿

And of course you do, nothing could ever compare to have your own child/children, where neither you want to believe it or not !!!
