Re: HELP! Purchasing Decisions?
 (United States)

price.

I don't want to build because all I will save is maybe $150.00?  If I go with Dell either new as promo or referb, I will have geniune xp pro, warranty if contents go bad, everything i need, case, hdd (250gig or higher), ram, nic, etc.

Maybe i should list out the parts, can somebody post prices of each alternative if I were to build vs buy?

Re: HELP! Purchasing Decisions?

The two D's will outproduce the conroe, but at roughly 3 times the power draw. (all stock).

However, the self-built conroe overclocked will probably outproduce the two D's, again at almost 1/3 the power draw.

Re: HELP! Purchasing Decisions?
 (N/A)

Thanks for the feedback Xaak and DT.

I have a question for you Conroe owners, would it be possible if you could list what you paid for your conroe establishment?

If so, can you list out the parts required to build?  If anyone would like to specifiy what I would need in particular, that would be groovy.  I am new ot building my own, thus... answering your initial question DT, why buy?  because I've never built my own.  It was always easier to buy...

Please advise.... TIA

Re: HELP! Purchasing Decisions?

These are the prices I paid and hardware I got from a local small computer shop for the second Conroe setup I have;

Intel E6300 Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz EM64-bit Socket 775 CPU, 1066FSB, 2MB L2 - retail box
$223.84

ASRock 775Dual-VSTA VIA PT880 Socket 775 Mainboard, 2xDDR2-667 and 2xDDR3200, 1xPCI-Ex16 & 1xAGP8x, 4xPCI, 4xATA133, 2xSATA, 8Ch Audio, 10/100LAN, 8xUSB2.0
$85.84

Corsair 512MB PC2-5400 667Mhz DDR2 Memory
$82.84

The guys at the shop gave me $100 off the cpu and board in exchange for my A64 3200+ and socket 939 board.

Used an old hard drive, video card, case and power supply. It's used as a cruncher only.

Well, Xaak's post made me decide to take the conroe plunge this morning. Ordered the 6600, DS3, and the ballistic memory.  Just happen to have a couple of buddies that are looking for more computer equipment, if I can sell off a few of my el-cheapo AMD systems I might have to order at least one more conroe.

Re: HELP! Purchasing Decisions?

BB, I can't speak for the asrock mobo, as I've never used one, but I've had bad experiences with non-intel chipsets performance wise.  If you're getting DDR2, I woudn't buy a board that support regular DDR as there has to be performace compromises involved in designing the board around slower memory.  Experience tells me don't skimp on the mobo.

The Corsair is nice memory, but it might not overclock as well as the better stuff, but it is a whole lot cheaper .

Question:  I know that I've already asked this in the irc channel, but I forgot the response..  I have a few older 3dfx cards, an older ATI radeon 8500 dv card, and some basic hard drives, not SATA or SCSI, can I use them instead?

You can use a PCI video card, and the newer 965 boards are typically coming with one IDE connector, you can run 2 IDE devices, typically one hdd and one optical drive.

When are you planning on building? Sounds like the best of both worlds would be a custom build with a new Core 2 Quadro, which would work with all of the above hardware. Sometime after the first of the year, Intel will be releasing the mainstream versions , looks like the first month or two they will be focusing on the high end gaming rigs.
