conroe vs. amd athlon64 x2
(N/A) Modified By Crystallize on 11/3/2006 8:07:44 PM)

I'm thinking about upgrading, not now but eventually...

Which is a better cruncher conroe or amd athlon64 x2 ?

Also is Conroe the same as Core 2 Duo ?, just want to make sure I got this right.

Does it matter if you only run Win2000 in anyone of them as I know

that for example the "multi threading" technology requires WinXP at least ?

Oh, dear, yes that was a very big difference in fact !

So Conroe is that way to go in that case.

How ever I need to know that I can run it with Win2000.

I do NOT like WinXP the slightest, matter of fact, I can't stand it.

I read somewhere on a Swedish site just a few minutes ago that it would run
on Win2000 but I'd really appreciate if I could get that confirmed.

windows 2000 works fine with the conroes. I have an E6400 running under W2k right now. RAC is doing about 1850 But it is overclocked to 3.4Ghz..

It's not the theme I hate so much as I know you can change it but XP is too big, it uses too much CPU and eats RAM for breakfast

and it have some security settings I don't like !

That was what I needed to hear.

I know Win2K support multiple CPUs I have had a AMDmp PC earlier, how ever it does not support the HT,

so I wanted to be sure... thanks a lot

How ever I will have to save up some money, they have just been released here in Sweden recently so I'll

wait until prices have dropped a little but it shouldn't take more than 4-6 months or so !

I do never overclock CPUs though, it prolongs the lifespand of the CPU and it need less cooling,

the fans we have here s*cks and I don't care for watercooling !

I actually use less memory on my laptop running XP Pro than I did running Win2K.  It was just a matter of making sure that I turned off stuff I knew I wasn't going to be using and that didn't need to be loaded into memory.  Right, now my basic image for XP Pro only takes 176MB of memory, my Win2K image uses 194MB of RAM.
From what I've heard and seen from these guys here, the Conroe's run pretty cool and if you aren't going to OC them, the stock cooler with the retail kit should be plenty to cool it.  Otherwise, $20 should pick you up a good block/fan set to keep it nice and cool.  Dell's use a "proprietary" system which is pretty stock when it comes down to it to cool their systems.

Well, I don't use laptops, I just know the things I've tryed to be true...but it doesn't matter as it is compatible with Win2K !

Yes, I will use the boxed cooler with it.

You say it's easy to buy a better cooler, but it's easy for you to say, you don't know how it is here where I live,

that have been one of the bigger problems here in Sweden for long, to find sufficient good cooling *sigh*

By the way how are the prices on (boxed) CPUs where you live, I'm just a bit curious ?

Here they are right now the lowest prices are as follows.

2,13 ghz is now on approx. 2200:- ($275)
and a 2,4ghz is on now some 3100:- ($385)

Also I have understood you need at least an 350W PSU... and that will cost a bit too..

and the motherboards that support it only uses DDR2 (that means I have to buy new RAM as well) + new motherboard !
