motherboard ASUS P5NSLI questions !
(N/A) Modified By Crystallize on 11/6/2006 1:17:39 AM)

I was thinking a ASUS P5NSLI to my upcoming Conroe,

http://www.asus.com/products4.aspx?modelmenu=1&model=1311&l1=3&l2=11&l3=0

but well, it's been a while since I updated a computer the last time and obviously a lot have happened since.

This mainboard anyway seems to supports two NVIDIA® SLI-ready graphic cards, what exactly does this mean ?

Does it mean that you can put in any 2 graphic cards into it or does it have to be Nvidia  ?

Does this mean that you can connect 2 monitors to it, one to each graphic card ?

This would be very useful function for me, actually it's necessary, either with this solution (if that what it means) or a monitor switch.

Also as I wanted to ask, can you have 2 keyboards to one computer ?

I know you can have 2 mouses, but I'm not sure about keyboards ?

the blue and black pci express slots are both for video cards u can have either 1 card with 1 gpu within or 2 with 1 gpu within or 2 with 4 gpus 2 on each and it a nvidia thing sli just like raid 0 for hard drives and dual channel for memory

If you use 2 graphic cards they must be the exact same make and model, also you'll need a power supply that can handle 2 vid cards. At least a 500 watt.  Your son will be wanting to use this rig for his gaming.

Is this requirement just on that type of board?  I have always used different make and model pci cards, no problem.  thinking back, i even used a pci and agp together, i think...

Re: motherboard ASUS P5NSLI questions !

you only have to run same make and model video cards if you want to run SLI which will take both cards and run them in tandem for a more powerful video card.

if you want to run multiple displays, then you can run any cards you want.

Not according to what people have said below !

but what do you mean with handle 2 vid cards, does it have to have some additional sockets that "normal" PSUs don't have or is enough if it's just have a lot of W ?

He is NOT going to touch my new baby

How ever I'm going to give him my old server instead the AMD64 3000+ and he is just as happy about that and it will be a good upgrade from his Celeron2400.

That was exactly what I needed to know  !

the thing is that I'm going to combine 2 computers to only 1 now, it going to cost some but it'll be worth it,

specially as I have them in my room now so the noise lever will drop a lot and making it easier for me to sleep !

And as I do more than twice the amount of work with only this one Conroe than both my server and movie computer together,

I just think it'll be a good idea.

One monitor have to right next to my bed.

The only thing that is going to get a problem now immediately is that I will not have room for all my hard drives,

I have 6 hard drives (with approx 1TB storage) and 1 CDRW-rom, how ever I have an old IDE controller card, I'm not sure that it's working

but I'll try, otherwise I buy a new one.

Yes I have understood that I'll need a very good new PSU, I'm thinking about this 650W

http://www.netsuperstore.se/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=1_83&products_id=50635

You think it'll do ?

And the only thing nobody have answered is, is it possible to have 2 keyboards on 1 computer ?

What Nutcase said is correct, my fault for not being clear on that.

It turns out that it doesn't matter anyways as I didn't understand that the graphic cards is not AGP after all but a new standard PCI-e that I'd never heard of before, as I said, it's been a while...

Also I found that I have a Radeon 9200 that have support for 2 monitors even if one socket is the type of the new flat monitor, but you can buy a adapter for it so you can connect 2 old types of monitors to it and they are very cheap, only a few $

How ever my big question is now, is there any Mother board for Conroe (preferably ASUS) that have a AGP port ???

Also thought to ask if there is any Mother board for Conroe that supports the old type of  DDRam ?

That would cut off some of my costs.

Nope.. AGP went to the wayside.. PCI express is the new standard, in fact PCI-X 2.0 is on the way. With an SLI MB you cannot place  an Nvidia card and a ATI card in together..(ATI uses a different technology called Crossfire). The two Nvidia cards do not have to be from the same manufacturer, but do have to have the same specs( speed, mem, etc.) for SLI mode. THe crossfire boards can take up to 3(three) vid cards(one master card, one standard, and an optional physics card).

Mwhahahahaaa... it's always fun to prove people wrong as I did find a mother board that supports both AGP and PCI-e

and both DDRII and DDR400, a Asrock 775Dual-VSTA - VIA PT880Pro

http://www.skycomp.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=28494&osCsid=b3558f9e677605a6d0f681982ea55bc0

And it turned out to be one of the cheapest on the net, at least here in Sweden,

ok, the manufacturer isn't any good, but then again, you should have warranty for it,

at least a year !

Anyways I'd just ordered the parts and going to get them Thursday,

how ever it will take another few days before I get the PSU from another store,

so I just have to be patient.

But it saved me a lot of costs this way, in all it just will cost exactly 2950 sek (or $369)

Ok, it will just be a Conroe 2,13Ghz but it's better than nothing, the 2,4 would cost another 1000sek ($125) more and I just didn't think it was worth it !

How ever I think this little baby will be crunching along just fine

Sometime late next week it should be ready.

BTW, since it supports both DDR400 and DDR II

I can always update later, so I was wondering if there was a very big difference between

DDR and DDR II in crunching power ?
