So where did I go wrong ?
 (N/A)

Ok, I made it, kind of.

http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2859548

I got it running and yes I didn't have to reinstall Windows, the fix with unistalling some drivers worked just fine.

I have also now installed SETI/BOINC but it only runs one process. Xaak said it would automatically run 2

but it doesn't, but in "processes" it says it uses 100% of the CPU power.

It look like this:

I haven't updated to the chicken version yet, you think that would help ?

Also sorry to be such a bother, but this is all for the team anyway !

You'll need to set # of cpu's in your seti preferences to 2 on the web site account.

No bother at all. Really.

Something just toggled in this head full of obscure datum, was that W2K and perhaps XP also sets SMP (symmetric multiprocessing) on the OS install. It can't be set by switching motherboards since SMP is set on the initial install. If the install was done on a single core, don't think it can be reset, it's not a driver that can be changed, if I remember correctly.

I'd suggest some googling on the subject, please don't do a repair install on this advice, though. There may be a fix for this.

Sounds like you may have it, paul!

The install does a lot of hardware eval before putting software on there.

I would think that checking device manager would tell what Windows thinks it's got for a cpu.

Personally, I wouldn't hesitate about a repair install over the old install.  Just use the same directory; using a new directory will leave you trying to combine things that Windows wants to keep separate...BTDT.

Re: So where did I go wrong ?

It doesn't say anything there...

It looks like this..

I'll do what ever you think I should, I'm useless at these things.

I suppose I could do a new install of Windows on another hard drive,

I have loads of space !

How ever it's 4.12 AM here now and I need to get some shut-eye !

But I'll check in first thing tomorrow and see what suggestions you have !

It had some problems recognizing the RAM also,

it said it was DDR333 but it is not, I had to change that manually in the bios.

Also it didn't find the other RAM stick at all, but now it have !

yeah, just what DT is asking.  What's appears in your device manager, one or two processors?  From my experience with many, I mean many, P4's w/ HT, the 2nd processor is detected but BOINC takes a little while to start grabbing work for the 2nd CPU (virtual in my case).  They still appear in the device manager but some boxen didn't start crunching two at a time for the first hour into detecting the dual setup.

Oh wait, your on 2k.  You won't see the cpus listed in the device mgr.  How about cpuz, what shows up using that app?

CPU-Z says 1 CPU !

Now I have to go to bed, my brain is hurting !

Hope your brain is better.

I echo the advice to do a repair install. Windows will install the correct drivers, and you will keep all of your settings, including email and all of your installed programs.

Yes, thanks my head is a bit better.

Ok, lets see what I can do about this, even if I must admit I'm a bit doubtful that this repair thing will work,

but I will try !

Re: So where did I go wrong ?

I knew it wouldn't work, but not for the reason I thought.

When I tried it all of a sudden said

"setup has determine that drive C is corrupt and cannot be repaired"

So I will try with a clean install from another drive !

Re: So where did I go wrong ?

Ok,  what ever the new install at least got both of the CPUs working and I now have 2 WUs crunching at the same time.

Now I just have to fix the hard drives and I'm all set again, that is the main point really.

You can also see now that both CPUs are woring here: http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/show_host_detail.php?hostid=2860601

At least I got it going

Cool looks like you've got it straightened out, one thing, "your computers" shows 2 E6400's

Yes, but that is only because it always creates a new one when you make a fresh install of Windows.

But you are right, it seems to be working out just fine now, there was some incompatibility problems with the hard drives.

and unfortunately I lost the windows setup but did manage to save almost all other data.

I also installed the optimized "chicken" SETI app and it seems to be working just fine.

So now I just have to buy new DDR II RAM to improve the performance even a bit more and I'll be done !!!
