yeah, only a gig, nope no floppy, or dvd option.  I can even scale down the hdd to 80gig but it was like $40 more for the 160gig.  i'm trying to save money...  So, what do you think?  worth $2,200?  If you think it needs more memory then 1gig (667mhz)  to run two QUAD cores, I will break down and get another gig, but why?  would another gig really make any difference if this is a cruncher?  please do let me know, I don't understand why i would need more..

Not too shabby... but keep in mind, most (if not all,) BOINC projects are single threaded. Running multiple cores really doesn't speed things up, at least from what I've seen. It just allows you to run more projects at once. I've also not see much of a credit boost, running one project on each core. That's to say, if I run one project per core, I still seem to get the same number of credits per day as running one project per server. I'm actually somewhat disappointed with this, after running CPDN on Itanium 2 and Xeon 5160 systems. I was a little disheartened to see that the results really weren't all that better from my XEON 2.4GHz system or even my AMD 64 3200+ and P4 2.8 dekstops! From what I can tell, BOINC projects need to come a long way to truely take advantage of SMP and dual/quad-core technology.

But... keep in mind I only run CPDN, which is a processor pig! :)

well as for the floppy no big deal. depending on the OS you install I like to go a gig of ram per processor not sure where your getting this system or where its shipping to but i think you can do better. not much but better. also the manufacturer of the ram is almost as important as the size and speed of the ram.

Nice system, but I'm pretty sure that these new Xeon processors do not support hyperthreading.

That thing's going to crawl as a cruncher with only a gig.  256MB per seti process is an absolute minimum from what I've found.  Any less and you do a ton of paging and it'll kill performance, and I mean kill.  And other projects may take more.  I would go with at least 2 gigs and consider even more.

Edit:  The core 2 processors do not support hyperthreading, that's a Pentium 4/D based feature.

somewhere on the dell site, while building the system online, i read that the xeon 5100 series now supports hyperthreading.  it was only for that series and they were quad core cpus.  i will look around just to clarify since i also need a server to go along with the custom built e6600 crunchers..

Re: What do you think of this system?

here it is.  saw it at intel's site and also on dell's site as a note, but i can't seem to duplicate that note again.  i will look for it at work just to be sure i have the right stuff before ordering..  thanks for the ram suggestions.  I did go back and bump it up to 2 gig then saved it to my cart.

http://www.intel.com/products/processor/xeon/specs.htm  The 5000 series supports HT and are dual core running the 65nm.

Here's another link from Intel spec'ing which systems support dual-core and hyper-threading. Note, the E5310 does not support HT.

look at that.  i guess that's why i was having the hardest time trying to get that ht enabled option and the hyperthreading note to appear when i rebuilt the server.  it must have been another model and cpu design that i've choosen yesterday.  In any event, by the looks of that chart, Xeons that are dual core do support hyperthreading.  For the life of me, I could have sworn that i put together a dualie quad core and got a note about hyperthreading.. oh well.  thanks for the help on this one.

Re: What do you think of this system?

Just to clarify, there are dual core Xeons that do support hyperthreading however, those are the older, hot running, power thirsty ones based on the Pentium 4/D netburst architecture. The new Conroe era Xeons do not support HT, neither dual nor quad core.
