Strange problem with keyboard !
(N/A) Modified By Crystallize on 12/31/2006 3:46:54 PM)

I have a problem with my keyboard, all of a sudden it just stopped working, totally.

They only thing that works on it is the NumLock key  (the led lights), CapsLock don't work (no led) nor the ScrLk,

It seems to be connected to the PS/2 port in some way, I tested the keyboard on the USB port and it works just fine,

I tested another keyboard on the PS/2 port and nothing happed.

Is it the motherboard that is broken ?

It is the Core2Duo motherboard, the ASROCK S775 PT880PRO.

I might add also that the built in LAN already broke on it but I put another spare 3Com Lan in it

as I was too lacy to go and get it RMA, I still have full warranty on it !

Any suggestions ?

Sounds like it's time to RMA it, unfortunately.

I have really been putting this off, you see I don't "love" to tinker with PCs,

actually there is not many things I know that I like less. (well, maybe going to the dentist)

But I suppose I just have to do this after the holidays,

since you can't reinstall Windows without a PS/2 keyboard port, if I would need to.

How ever I don't need to send it anywhere, it's bought in a shop nearby so I can just go and change it.

Chrystalize, who told you that tou cannot reinstall XP without a PS keyboard?  I have no PS/2 port on this machine at all and the keyboard is wireless, yet I have reinstalled on it, as I have with other machines in the office and here.

All you have to do is enter the BIOS and alter the USB settings to get the BIOS to look for legacy USB devices on boot up.

However in the case of your Mainboard, I would RMA it, then but a better board in the future, ASRock are serious Pants!!

I didn't want to be that hard, but yeah... There's a very good phrase here in Hungary; we are not that rich to buy cheap things.

No I have Win2K, therefor the problem, at least earlier it just didn't work.

Well, there was a reason why I bought this board and that was that it supported both normal DDR RAM and DDR2 and still supported AGP graphics.

Even if I now have DDR2 on it I still have the AGP graphics.

And I don't want to reinstall Windows if possible, just switch the mo-bo.

Re: Strange problem with keyboard !

Even under Win2K the OS will recognise a USB keyboard if the BIOS does, this machine has dual boot as I run some software that works under W2K Pro but not under XP Pro for some odd reason..one of the bits of software actually being written by Microsoft!!

However I can understand your concerns about the reinstalling, but did you realise that changing the Mainboard does not require you to reinstall the O/S, it'll simply mean that on your first boot up the O/S will ask for drivers for the new components that it does not recognise automatically and have the drivers for, I have done this several times when running multiple machines for SETI over the last 7 years.

Yes, I know this, from this thread when I first built this Conroe. http://www.tswb.org/Forums/tabid/173/forumid/9/threadid/5024/scope/posts/Default.aspx

How ever since the OS then was installed on a single CPU it didn't recognize the second CPU until I did a fresh reinstall,

but you are right, it can be done this time.

I'll think about it and since I now do use DDR2 RAM on it, I have a few more options for motherboards,

personally I have always preferred ASUS, they are very reliable in the long run, even when in 24/7 use, I'll check in on it.

That's right. Normaly(!) it works like that since Win95+ OpSystems are P'n'P (Plug and Pray ) OpSystems. When I change configuration - such as MB - prior to that I used to create a copy of my Boot partition using even Ghost or DiskImage. It it HIGHLY recommended when we are talking about MS systems... :D

Unfortunatly I couldn't find any other good AGP compatible motherboard in the store where I bought it,

If anyone else can, please feel free to point me to it, it's this URL: http://www.levitech.se/searchListA1.asp

Chrystalize, they do have one good board that fits what you want.

However, I would ask them if they can order you a board, they may have it, but I cannot find it listed, it is the Asus P5P800.

The Gigabyte board is good, and they are a million times better than ASRock, however the Asus board is a million times better than the Gigabyte.

Nice, thanks, I'll do that !

I'll call them tomorrow !

Jim, the Asus P5P800. is an 865PE chipset, and doesn't support Conroe cpu's.

For myself, my 4 conroes use old PCI video cards I pick up for next to nothing, here and there. I have a stack of decent AGP video cards I could use, but the drawbacks of boards that can use DDR and AGP cards far outweigh the headroom and overclockability of 955 based boards like Gigabyte's S3 or DS3, which I really like.

Of course, this is my preference, for my needs.

Neither did the Gigabyte motherboard he recommended.

How ever I have reconsidered to buy a PCI-E graphics card, they are not that expensive

this one is only 349sek (or $43)

A ASUS GF 6200TC PCI-E 64MB DDR2/256MB TC < -- click

and this mother board a ASUS S775 I945GZ C2D VGA DDR2 GLAN 8CH  < -- click

I should only be needing to pay 159sek (or $19) in difference price.

they should be compatible with my other stuff.

2 x 512 mbs DDR2 667 RAM and have support up to 4 hard drives/CD-ROM

and have built in LAN and sound and it even have a built in VGA, though I

wont use it due to that it steals CPU power in that case.

I've been using MSI boards for a few years now and have been very happy with them.

I would suggest you ask Asus to rewrite their information then.. Asus P5P800

I have installed Dual Core CPU's (Conroe's) on these boards and they work fine.

I have looked on Asus's site, nowhere does it say it supports Core 2 Duo. Dual core pentium 4's, like the 820 and 920's, yes. AFAIK, the 865 chipset is the slower binned version of the 875 chipset, none of the 865 boards I've owned would go over 260 Mhz FSB, and the Conroe's start at 266 FSB. If you have installed Conroe's on these boards, are they defaulting to 200 Mhz FSB?

AFAIK, the only Conroe Intel chipsets are ther 945, 965 and 975 series. Asus's Conroe supported list here supports this- http://zeus.asus.com/hq/products1.aspx?l1=3&l2=0&l3=0&modelmenu=0&share=txt/core2
