Memory Recommendations
 (United States)
Since I haven't built a machine since June 2003, my main rig right now is a AMD 2500+ Barton OC'd to 3200 speeds, with 1GB RAM and a 256MB video card.  I'm happy with it and can't afford to buy a new machine right now and will probably wait til Christmas this year for a new build.

In the mean time, I want to upgrade my memory to 2GB.  The A7N8X-Dlx revision 2 mobo I have can have up to 4GB I think, but 2GB should be enough for most of the games I play and to keep it from hitting the disk cache.

Any recommendations on DDR?  I see you guys throw around Patriot a lot here for other rigs.  How does this hold up?  I understand I won't be able to run the timings I'm running right now (11-2-2-2) but that's not what matters.  What matters to me is that my machine runs smoother.

Actually, since you got out of it, Winbond re-released the famous bh-5 chips, and people were getting some pretty high clocks at the timings you mentioned. Look for sticks with UTT label / nickname. Since a lot of people have moved on to ddr-2, you may be able to pick up a few gigs at a reasonable price.

Kingston's Hyperx 3200 series is still available at around $170/2GB kit.  I might have to pick that up.

I can get a lot of deals under $200 for the 2GB kits.  I'll have to look into it more.

I finally took the plunge and convinced the finance minister that upgrading my PC to 2GB of RAM will get me through for at least another year with my PC.

I ended up getting these:

All of the reviews of this are dated 2-3 years ago from what I've read.  I'm sure this will easily overclock to keep me where I am right now, if not close.  I just need the extra RAM for gaming and some digital editing I've been doing now for some friends of home movies.

generally speaking, You have 3 real choices for decent OCing RAM  Crucial, Corsair,  or Kingston.  I wouldn't lowball either.  Be prepared to pay a few extra bucks to get a better bang for the buck

Re: Memory Recommendations

See my previous post.  I'm really not in this for OCing anymore.  I need more memory for applications and games that I am now playing.  Truthfully, if I go back to stock settings, I won't really care.  Also, I'm not a total n00b to OC'ing.  I've actually done quite a few systems for friends and family looking to get some bang for the buck.

Most of the deals on DDR right now (3200/2700) are mostly for stock clearing purposes for better and faster RAM anyway.

We'll see how far I push it.  I'll be happy to get 200FSB out of them if which I think they'll do without a problem.

Re: Memory Recommendations

I agree if you aren't looking to OC then you have still have "value" of each companies RAM. Another consideration is the Mobo. I just got done replacing my sons Mobo on his socket A. Seems Newegg only has a couple of choices and all are low end products. Only one allows for FSB speeds of 333. This almost screams UPDATE
