Annoying popup from router
(N/A) Modified By Crystallize on 3/3/2007 11:19:09 AM)

I have recently changed ISP and I'm only allowed one  IP address now and therefore I was forced to buy
a router (Netgear RP614v4). How ever I keep getting this very annoying security promting thingy everytime I starting
a program that uses the Internet or the Lan in any way, also autoupdate things causes this, like
when antivirus programs want to update or similar. And I get this on all computers that are connected to
the router. I do know the password, that is not it, but it's extreamly annoying.
I want the router to be quiet and work in the background and I don't need any additional
security promtings to it. It's not wireless and nobody outside my home could have access to it.

Any help with this would be much appriciated, I have tried to ask on the Netgear
forum but nobody seem to be interested in answering http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?t=4808

Re: Annoying popup from router

Something is set wrong in the router. Without proper understanding of what a router can do, default settings should not be giving you this message. I'd do a hard reset on with the reset button, follow your manual's instructions for the type of broadband you have, and leave the rest of the settings alone. At least until you get a grasp of what the devices capabilities are. Minimally, with default settings, it should act as a NAT translator, showing one device to your modem, then a hardware firewall between your modem and your LAN.

Anyone with broadband should have a router, it's one of the cheapest and effective ways to isolate your LAN from the internet and it's related pings and probes.

Looks like something in your network setup on the computers to me, and it's a Windows network setting, nothing to do with the router. No guarantees but if I have time I'll try to do the research, but it has to do with your networking protocols and if likely left over from your previous internet connection method.

If you get a chance post a screenshot of your LAN connection properties general tab.

I could be way off base too. Have you changed the default password yet?

There should be a problem with the ACL.

Check if you set-up it properly.

Also check your browsers' proxy settings, clients'default gateway, and so on.

As a guess, it looks like your browser is trying to use the router as a proxy.  You need to set your computers to get the IP automatically, make sure the router's set to act as a dhcp server, and make sure your browser settings are set to connect to the internet thru the lan, no proxy, etc.

How ever it may have sorted it out for it self all of a sudden. I'm not sure what I did really, if anything,
I did change some settings in Control Panels - Administrative tools - Local security policy - IP security policies on Local machine - Client, Secure server and Server. But I doubt very much that it was it...

How ever I'm just glad if it continues as it is now, with no popups.

Now I only get this popup when going to the  routers setup page (http://192.168.1.1), just as it should I suppose.

    Crystallize,
In your netgear setup where it asks if your connection requires a signin you have it checked as no. I believe you need to set it to yes and give the router the information so it can log you in automatically each time you access the internet. I hope this does it for you.

I was going to say something to that effect. Sounds almost as if you have the router set as a firewall where it is requiring you to login to the network each time.

I don't know, there is no field to put the password for the internet connection anyways so there is really no point in that. How ever what ever it was it did go away by it self, I haven't needed to login for over 24 on any of the computers.

Something that was a bit harder to resolve was that I started to get a "low id" on e-mule.
How ever with little research I figured how to forward the ports necessary for it to work. How ever I still have some problems with MSN, it seems like it connects and disconnects every minute or so on all computers. Probably the same problem with the ports, but its not as easy to fix as MSN uses like 13 local ports per computer and it's a heck of a lot to forward for every PC...

Re: Netgear RP614v4Re: Annoying popup from router

The login and password is usually required for a dsl connection. Most modern cable broadband connections are done at the modem, where the cable's node authentates you modem's mac address, then from there on, it doesn't matter wether you have a single computer or a router.

You've taken a nice first step in knowing your routers capabilities. Forwarding ports is critical to getting some applications to work right. Not familiar with MSN, as I use Trillian for all my chat needs, but it needed no special setup to run my MSN account, that I know of.

In any event, whatever it takes to make your router work is worth it. You now have a hardware firewall between your LAN and the internet. Much more effective than a softwall.

Re: Netgear RP614v4Re: Annoying popup from router
 (N/A)
Ok, I still haven't got the MSN not to log in and out all the time. How ever I have managed after a long hard trouble shooting to make the FTP to my homepage work *sigh* and all that it needed was really that I had to do a hard reboot of the ISP modem.

How ever I tried to put the ISP's username and password (the username and password field came up when you changed to YES in that box) but it didn't do any good at all, on the contrary, I couldn't connect to internet at all ...

In the instructions that I got from the ISP provider I don't have to login with any username or password, I use their own modem, it's a "real broadband" that doesn't go through the phone line but directly through the cable net (that is in attachment to the TV cable holes) so they have their own "net"...

Well, if anyone have a good suggestion for how to solve the MSN account I'm all ears, otherwise it seems to working ok for now..

And yes, that is right, it's nice to have a "real firewall" ... not just a software...

Thanks for all suggestions

If you ran Windows XP you could probably enable UPnP in the router and in Windows and in the router and it would handle Messenger for you, but with Windows 2000 that's no help. Mind you, I have no problems with MSN Messenger and haven't opened any extra ports for it.

I'd suggest doing a tracert.

see if your are losing connectivity or dropping packets.

How ever I was a bit fast to say that I fixed the FTP problem, well, I did but it came back and when I do a cold reboot of the router it works like for some 30  minutes but then I get the "time out error" again...

So any sugestion would be appriciated is welcome to that also..

And no I do not have XP, neither do I want it...

I'm seriously thinking about buying a real "hub", it would be a bit expensive by all means but it might be worth it...
