ADVICE NEEDED..LINUX OS SUGGESTIONS
 (N/A)

Ok, I am fed up to the back teeth with the bollox I have to go through with Microshaft. Every time they "improve" something lately they crash the stuff or make it shittier than before.

I am fed up having to constantly monitor my hardware for OS failures, I simply do not have the time and this was one of the main reasons for getting rid of the farm a couple of years back.

I know Linux versions have come a long way since then, so what i am looking for is a Linux version that works "out of the box" I do not have the knowledge to go reprogramming it, nor the time or inclination. The machines will ONLY run the OS and SETI, this main machine will remain a windows machine due to software and accessory constraints etc. The OS chosen must run BOINC, support various Mobo manufacturers, such as Elite, Abit, Asus and ASRock, further i have two HP machines that would require this OS, so it has to be compatible with HP hardware (tall order I suspect).

It does not have to be free, but i don't want to break the bank either, further, I have a myriad of machines, I do not want the bollox of buying multiple licences so it has to be able to be installed and run on multiple machines.

This is urgent teamsters, I have three machines down thanks to the latest Microsoft "security" update, despite disabling auto update and the only way to get them back is a complete reinstall as there are damaged files in the boot sectors.

Bear in mind I use a Netgear switch so this must also be supported, but I suspect that is not an issue.

Thanks in advance..

Jim

The two webservers I run are using Cent OS (not sure of the version) however, they are stable as anything I've ever ran that was Linux.  http://www.centos.org/

I've also run Red Hat, Debian, SuSE, and Fedora Core distro's of Linux.  I use RedHat a lot at work for our VM boxes.

If you can't beat'em, join'em. Then beat'em.

You might want to try Ubuntu http://www.ubuntu.com/ I ordered several CD's from them (free of charge) and it has worked on each machine I've fired it up on so far. they also have a 64bit version available.

Red Hat would also be a good choice or Mandrake

I've worked with these three and they all have out of the box solutions that work pretty well. I think the only changes I've ever had to make with playing around with these is for odd ball network cards I was running at the time of test. They all tend to support the mainstream cards without any re-configuration.

Which version of Ubuntu are you using?  Ubuntu 7.04 - Supported to 2008  or

Gents..many thanks for the feedback, all very much appreciated. I have ordered a Version of Redhat and of Mandrake on CD so I can test it, and I have downloaded all 700MB of Ubuntu 7.09. I only need to burn it to a CD so that i can give it a whirl. One thing I liked about Ubuntu is that Dell and a couple of other manufacturers have started to ship the OS with some of their machines and all say they have not had to make any changes for operation..major plus.. I know that it works with all Dell and HP machines made in the last 5 years, so I am OK there and it also works with the mainboards I have and every driver is covered..these are major pluses.

However I will not make a decision as to a permanent OS until I have recieved the others and done a proper evaluation of all three. Now all we need is for Berkeley to be unborked!!

I'll have to check.

I've been running mandriva for several years, now. I've even updated the dang thing. Went from mandrake 10.0 to 10.1 to mandriva 2k6 free and now 2k7 free. This is a very smart OS and is incredibly easy to work. For those unfamiliar with Linux its a piece of cake. Depending on the flavor you get an extensive library of programs that are either installed or available to install on the system.

My 2 favorite distrtibutions are suse (opensuse) and ubuntu, in that order.

But, all I am running right now is suse, because I became so used to yast (it's similar to the control panel in windows), and webmin as admin solutions, nothing else seems to totally fit the way I think. As you play with different distros, you'll find one that will fit you.

Try many, and experiment for quite some time to see which one fits you.

Boog, Your right, I have installed a version of linux once before, many years ago, but that was a lot of messing about and coding that I simply did no have time to learn, so I drifted off..well actually ran screaming!! I am using Ubuntu on this machine and I have found with Opera installed as the browser i quite like the feel of it so far, faster than windows by a large degree, more intuitive in some instances, not in others and certainly a LOT less cluttered. However i two other distro's in the post on CD so when they arrive I will be installing them on other machines and giving a good try out before finally deciding which one to use in the long term..maybe all!!

Re: ADVICE NEEDED..LINUX OS SUGGESTIONS

The last serious install of Linux I had was Slackware 8.01.

With Ubuntu and Kbuntu, ironically the CD's they mailed me were coasters; however, the downloaded iso's worked just fine once burned to discs.

Should I run another Linux machine, however, it will be Slackware.  I go back to unix straight from Bell Labs when only they and universities had it, and anyone who puts a GUI in front of the cli should be drawn and quartered in boiling oil while being hung from the neck until dead in front of a firing squad.

Cyber, you have to bear in mind that the majority of PC users have no choice but to use Winblows and make BG even richer. By producing OS's that have GUI's people can identify with the Linux tree is slowly evolving into a serious challenger to MS on all fronts. The OS has to be intuitive, it has to be easy to use and it has to be secure, and there should not be any need for specialist skills to use it or the machine it is on. Whether you like it or not, at the moment the only widley distributed OS that does this is Winblows. Ubuntu is a massive step forward from my perspective, I appreciate it is not such a leap for others, but such versions are required. If you do not wish to use one with a GUI then that is your perogative.
